Legal Requirements
Yes! even the bureaucracy has demands on people who have rescued and are raising injured or orphaned Native Wildlife. The main purpose is to keep track of the animals in care and to try and discourage unscrupulous people from using this as a mechanism to trade (illegally) in wildlife.
In South Australia it is necessary to get a rescue permit if you are raising an injured or orphaned Native Animal.
Applications are available from your local Department for Environment and Heritage office.
If you have more than two animals in your possession you need to apply for a permit to keep and sell. Again applications are available from your local Department for Environment and Heritage office.
Applications are also online at

Remember, in South Australia you can not release a rescued animal in to the wild without the permission of the Department. This is to protect not only the animal being released, which after a long period in captivity may not be suitable for release but to also protect the genetic integrity of the wild animals in the area of release.
