There was a sizable population in the area, being supported by the whaling stocks that were dessimated in a short number of years. After the Wairau Massacre all the Maoris left and went back up to Kapiti Island. Shortly after all the Pakehas left for Wellington after the whaling stocks dried up. | ||||
