Tory Channel This
is the route used by shipping Picton to Wellington, notably the Cook Strait
Ferries. Boating Info - Cautions - CHANNEL
COOK STRAIT ENTRANCE - Dangerous currents up to 7 knots occur around the
entrance. When strong winds occur from the South it becomes even more
hazardous. Least tidal currents can be expected on a lay close to West Head and
as far as Taranaki Rock and heading toward Okukari Bay and similarly in reverse
on an outward course. Take care of the rocks near to shorelines on both heads. Ferries give warnings on approaching the
heads. DIEFFENBACH POINT END - Care is
needed in this vicinity also as ferries can be encountered unexpectedly as they
enter or leave Tory Channel from the main arm of Queen Charlotte Sound. Regulation re Transiting (either direction)
Cook Strait Entrance of Tory Channel All vessels no matter what their size are
required to broadcast an "All Ships" message informing of their
intention to transit the Entrance. E.g.
"All ships, all ships, a/l ships, this is the launch "XXX". We
shaff be entering/exiting Tory Channel Entrance in 8 minutes time. Listening CH
16/19" These broadcasts must be
made on the listening Channel 16 and 19 VHF. Making
such broadcasts does not establish a priority in negotiating the entrance.
These still exist in giving way or right of way to any vessel over 500 gross
tons (over 35-40 metres in length or above). Best practice for small craft,
especially to avoid risk of encountering a large vessel, is to try and stay out
of the centre course and stay closer to sides of the passage as mentioned
above. TIDAL FLOWS - The channel is
noted for its very severe tidal flows and rips in many places. Again awareness
and caution should be shown.

the Channel in 1826. Tory Channel for
many years was an important base for several shore based whaling ventures with
the last run by the Perano family ceasing operations in 1964. Final seasons saw
annual kills in the vicinity of 200 whales. Today
- The remnants of the Perano whale processingg station at Fishing Bay can still
be seen. The Channel is now an important link in shortening the sea ferry
service route on the Wellington Picton run. Boating
