Currently there are 2 treatment options available to remove eye floaters. Laser treatment and vitrectomy eye surgery.
Laser Treatment: Laser Treatment tries to push the floaters out of the line of sight or tries to destroy the floaters. This procedure doesn’t have any risks or complications, but is only successful 40 % of the time. Also it isn’t a cure, but just attempts to reduce the problem. Ophthalmologist’s who perform this treatment are John Karickhoff, Scott Geller and Marie-Jose Tassignon. A scientific article about this procedure can be found here.

Vitrectomy: Vitrectomy is performed very often for several kinds of diseases. A vitrectomy removes the vitreous gel and replaces it with another fluid. Rather than the laser treatment, a vitrectomy is a real cure for the disorder. Vitrectomy to remove floaters which is also called FOV (Floaters Only Vitrectomy) is a minimal invasive surgery. The complication risks for vitrectomy eye surgery are: Cataract (10%), Retinal detachment (1%), Infection (0.5%). Most surgeons however don’t want to perform this kind of surgery for floaters for 2 reasons. The first reason is that most of them don’t accept vitreous floaters as a serious problem.
The second reason is that most doctors aren't aware of the fact that a vitrectomy to only remove floaters has a much less risk factor then vitrectomies performed for other diseases like diabetes or retinal detachment. Some surgeons however are willing to perform FOV.
Some experienced ophthalmologist’s who perform this kind of surgery are: Pavel Stodulka and Peter Stalmans. This surgery is recommended if the patient is really bothered by the floaters.
