Bus construction requirements
Windows must open at least 12 inches.
Steps on Type II buses cannot be more than (blank) inches high.
Steps on Type I buses cannot be more than (blank) inches high.
"School Bus" signs must be at least 8 inches high.
PUC id # on side of bus must be at least 2 inches high and visible for at least 50 feet.
Horn must be heard for at least 200 feet.
Aisles must be at least 13 inches wide.
13 inch rump rule.
Bus capacity is figured at each passenger weighing 150 pounds and the driver at 150 pounds.
The steering wheel and a floor mounted stick shift must be at least 3 inches apart.

CBT:  Clearance + Brake = Tail.
Clearance lights must be visible for at least 500 feet.
Brake lights must be visible for at least 500 feet.
Tail lights must be visible for at least 1000 feet.
500 + 500 = 1000:  C + B = T.

The exhaust pipe must extend at least 2 inches beyond the body of the bus, but cannot extend past the bumper.
292 certificate good for 13 months.
Fire extinguisher certificate good for 12 months.
A school bus must have a fire extinguisher with a rating of at least 8 BC, or two extinguishers having an aggregate rating of not less than 8 BC.
A wheelchair school bus must have two fire extinguishers, each with not less that 8 BC rating.One to be placed in the driver's compartment and the other at the wheelchair loading door or emergency exit.

A First Aid Kit must have the following number of components:
  • 1-16 passengers 10 units
  • 17 - 42 passengers 16 units
  • 43 and above 24 units

    Type II bus can have 2 passengers next to the driver.
    July 1st, 2004: Lap/shoulder belts required on passenger seats on new type II buses.
    July 1st, 2005: Lap/shoulder belts required on passenger seats on new type I buses.
    Aisles, doorways and emergency exits must never be blocked by luggage or bags.
    2 flat (l/r), 1 inside and 1 crossover mirror required on bus.  Convex mirrors not required by law.
    Flat mirrors - 50 square inches minimum.
    Crossover mirror(s) - 40 square inches minimum.
    Must be able to see 200 feet to the rear on flat mirrors.
    Mirrors must not extend more than 10 inches beyond the body of the bus.
    A Type 2 school bus, designed for carrying not more that 16 passengers and the driver; OR manufactured on or after April 1, 1977, having a manufacturer's gross vehicle weight rating of 10,000 pounds or less, and designed for carrying not more than 20 passengers and the driver.
    Wheelchair fasteners shall contact the wheelchair on at least three points and shall be spaced to provide the most effective securement. No fastener shall project more than 1 1/2 in. above the floor in the area between the wheel wells of the vehicle.
    The travel of hydraulic brake foot pedals shall not exceed 60% of the available travel.
