(comment on previous N.E.T.A. conference)
"For me, what was especially notable about this event was that I felt as if I had come home. I have always felt somewhat apologetic about my background as an artist, in two ways. First, I felt as though it did not count in being a counselor-therapist, that I must not tell too many people of my origins, as they would discount this background. Secondly, I felt as though I had betrayed the artist in me by working mainly with words. During this conference I felt reconnected to my roots. I saw the huge value of the artist as therapist and the special contribution he/she makes to the field. I saw the connections between the art and dance experiences from whence I come and the work I am now doing, in a new light."
Dorri Jacobs, Ed.D.

Installation of Dr. Daniel L. Araoz as a Distinguished Fellow of The National Expressive Therapy Association

Labyrinth Walk

Christiana Brinton (see elsewhere)

Many spiritual tools have reemerged in the past few years. They all point to a search for meaning. The Labyrinth, in particular, has struck a chord. It is a powerful tool open to seekers of all beliefs. The Labyrinth is a divine imprint found in religious traditions in various forms around the world. Labyrinth designs have been found in Crete, Algeria, France, Italy, Great Britain, Scandinavia, and the southwestern United States. By walking the Labyrinth we are discovering a long-forgotten mystical tradition. The mysterious winding path that takes us to the center becomes a metaphor for our own spiritual journey. Going in, we release the cares and concerns which detract us from our source. The center is a place of prayer and meditation where we receive clarity about our lives. As we walk back out on the same path that brought us in, we are granted the power to act.

Licensing Forum

(Informal and largely unscheduled meetings such as this one provide unparalled opportunities to raise questions, share information, discuss issues and communicate with colleagues from around the world.)

Moderated by Steve Ross, Ph.D. (see elsewhere)

The National Expressive Therapy Association is the advocacy organization which is spearheading the effort to license expressive therapists and expressive arts therapists in each and every state. Members of the Association receive periodic updates regarding progress. Conference participants will have the opportunity to find out what is happening, as well as ask questions and contribute feedback.

The New York Mental Health Counselors Association is the advocacy organization which is spearheading the effort to license the clinical counselors of New York. Their licensure bill recently passed the New York State Assembly, and as of September 1, 2001 they are hoping for passage in the Senate. To find out more about the licensure effort and the New York Mental Health Counselors Association, please visit their website at NYMHCA.org; email them at [email protected], or call them at 1(800)4-NYMHCA.)

Into the Light - A Creative Healing

Stephanie Buck, M.P.S. (see elsewhere)

"All of us eventually come to know that death is a part of life. I believe that we can be helped through our journey if we know that life is a part of death, and that any act of creativity is life-affirming.

I lived through a period of time when I was virtually traumatized by an experience of multiple deaths. There was no conscious plan to guide me through this time. I lived it and responded to it by listening to my inner voice, by paying attention to my dreams, my visions, and the urgent and recurring images. First came the poems, later and in between came drawings and paintings. Even later came grave rubbings, photographs and collages.

During this time of grieving, my friend Lee made a beautiful necklace for me, as a gift of comfort and love. (She told me that she had chosen the beads to symbolically represent the loved ones I had lost.) I have tried to string together my poems and my paintings, letters and photographs, so as to make a meaningful and beautiful necklace. I have used the thread of life's events, as they unfolded in time, and as I was moved to respond to them through my creative efforts. I offer it, too, as a gift of comfort and love."

Quilt Wall

"The Quilt Wall is essentially a long paper poster that is sketched to look like quilt squares. Individual quilt squares are glued on the poster, either with comments or drawings. The end result is very strong and builds up over the days of the conference.

"The title of the conference and the logo could be centered on the quilt as well as this poem which I have used before.

"I am a quilt

I am a quilt
of this and that
bits and pieces of memory
of time collecting and time assembling
of comfort and warmth
of color and design.

I am a quilt
of stories laughed over and cried over
but above all, remembered.
As pieces are placed side by side,
each quilter adds a unique pattern.
I am the gathering point for conversation and sharing.

I am an heirloom quilt
of fancy silk and satin quilt
or one made of flannel and cotton.
I put children to sleep and hang on museum walls.
But above all, I tell the stories.
I am a quilt.

Elin R. Babcock"

At the present time, this collection is the only one of its kind in the entire world. Some of the tapes are quite rare. A few may be the only copies in existence.

EVENING PRESENTATIONS

Trance Dance: Entering Our Body/Mind Consciousness

Wilbert Alix
has earned international recognition as a contemporary healer and teacher of body-centered psychology and shamanic studies. He was born and raised in the "Storyville" section of New Orleans. "Personally, my original experiences of trance dance and trance music were through my involvement in neighborhood 'Indian practices,' a weekly ritual gathering of New Orleanians of African descent who worshipped their historic connection with the Native American Indians who gave them shelter during the days of slavery." From 1975-86 his work with Baylor College of Medicine and the University of Texas Health Science Center ranged from cardiovascular research to organ transplantation. From 1990-93 he served as president of the Capital Area Mental Heath Center, one of the largest psychotherapy programs in the United States. He is the creator and director of the "Common Ground Project," a conflict management program that successfully brings together opposing groups through an education in integrity building and creative problem solving. His popular TV show "Awakening The Mind" has aired on public television since 1988.

The Trance Dance Workshop is an exploration into the unique use of healing sounds, dynamic percussive rhythms, transformational breathing techniques and the innovative use of a blindfold or bandana - together stimulating a "trance" state that promotes spiritual awakenings, mental clarity, physical stamina and emotional well-being. Driven by unique musical soundtracks recorded specifically for this method of healing, Trance Dance takes participants on an "inner journey" not limited to our normal perceptions of space/time. Previous participants report that Trance Dance unveils a deep "inner landscape" of images, experiences and "primal thinking" that contributes to the health and well-being of their spiritual life. Some participants have reported the reduction (and sometimes elimination) of long-standing, chronic ailments and pain.

Visit the Trance Dance website.

Engineering Creativity

Elin R. Babcock, M.Ed., M.F.A. (see elsewhere)

This workshop focuses on creativity as a method of expression, healing, and awareness development. The relaxed non-threatening atmosphere allows participants to attain or further develop the confidence of creative expression. The workshop will be presented in a combination of lecture, hands-on guided creative projects, and slides. Comfortable clothes are suggested.

A Journey of Possibilities: Using Movement and the Chakras to Access Inner Peace

John William Johnson, M.Ed., M.F.C.C., N.C.M.T. (see elsewhere)

The chakra system is thousands of years old. This session is a non-verbal approach to what they have to teach you. Like hatha yoga, the chakras can help you to move through your personality issues into a deep state of pure bliss and presence. After a brief introduction, the session will be all about using movement to find your own personal odyssey. Wear comfortable clothing. No experience necessary.

Visit the Spaciousness Project website.

BOOKSTORE

The official Bookstore for the Conference is Mental Health Resources, which will provide a quality onsite resource center at which Conference attendees will be able to explore and purchase the most extensive selection of resources on expressive therapy and expressive arts therapy, as well as other related therapies. Their conference bookstores are often noted as a highlight on post-conference evaluations. They offer a full line of educational and clinical resources, including audio and video tapes. Typically they carry 300-400 titles related to the conference topics, garnered from their research and close consultation with the conference organizers. In this case, that will include Dr. Furth's book, The Secret World of Drawings, recently republished by Inner City Books. Mental Health Resources will arrange with all Conference speakers to have each of their publications available, and will coordinate author book signings.
