Hollow Words
Jimmy stared at the children for a bit, thinking that even a life as enjoyable as his had to have unpleasant elements.  The fact was, he didn't really like his nephews.  He felt faintly uncomfortable around most younger people, for reasons he didn't understand. Moreover, these two seemed to be particularly obnoxious, even beyond the snot that was literally hanging from one of their noses.  Nevertheless he felt some sort of minor familiar duty to at least not openly state his distate.  Even more, he enjoyed talking, and telling his long, rambling and often repeated stories.

The two brats didn't particularly like to hear their uncles stories.  They did, however, enjoy watching him get very drunk and belligerent and shoot pigeons from the air.  They had long been hoping that Jimmy would drink too much or become so old, that he would simply pass out in the midst of a story and leave them alone with the bottle of liquor and the old rifle.  Thus every now and then they stopped by and pretended to listen to Jimmy's stories and bug him for the use of his jealously guarded rifle.  They had particularly high hopes for this particular day, as they had just eaten fortune cookies which seemed to state that they would be getting something they deserved for all their long work.

Thus the little group sat around for several hours, seperately nursing the bottle or their hopes, until Jimmy's slurry mumblings finally trailed off into inaudibility.  "Hey Uncle Jimmy?  Come on tell us what happened next," the younger one asked, to make certain that their childish dreams had finally come true.  Then he eagerly reached over and pried Jimmy's fingers from the trigger.  Of course, the older brother felt that it was his prerogative to take the first shot, so he reached over and demanded the rifle.  Unfortunately, he knocked the rifle out of his brothers hands instead.  This caused the gun to fall to the floor, and set off the trigger.

The retort of the gun startled both boys into stillness momentarily.
The sound of glass breaking in a nearby building shocked them out of the stillness and caused them to regain their former unanimity of action and thought.  "Shit!" they yelled and ran out of the apartment.
