| What is Explorers? | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| The Explorer Program is a division of The Boy Scouts of America. Explorer Post #311 is sponsored by the Central Ohio Joint Fire District. The Explorer Post allows for young men and women, age 14 and older, to explore career opportunities, develop life skills, and gain leadership experience. As a fire and EMS (emergency medical service) explorer, you have the opportunity to work with trained firefighters and parmedics while having fun learning "the tools of the trade." | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| What can I learn as an Explorer? | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| As an Explorer you will learn both fire and EMS related material and hands-on skills. Some of the fire knowledge and skills that you will gain include how to use gear, tools, and equipment, learn about fire behavior and fire attack, train on the use of ground ladders, learn about ropes and knots to perform rescues, vehicle extrication, and much more. | Can Explorers go on actual calls? | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Yes, Explorers are allowed to respond with the certified firefighters and paramedics. After you complete most of the basic skills and can prove your knowledge of the skills and equipment, you will be permitted to sign up for time where you can join the firefighters and EMTs of the Central Ohio Joint Fire District. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| As an Explorer it is a great privilege to be able to ride on emergency vehicles on actual calls. The Explorer Post at the Central Ohio Joint Fire District is one of the only programs in Central Ohio that allows Explorers to participate on actual fire and EMS calls. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

| How do I become an Explorer? | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| That's easy, just show up to a meeting to see if you like it, and then all you have to do is continue to learn and have fun. Explorer meetings are held every weekend alternating between Saturday and Sunday. Explorers must be at least 14 years old and have completed the 8th grade. All explorers shall maintain at least a "C" average and remain in good standing while in high school. Explorers are to follow all Boy Scout, Explorer Post, and Central Ohio Joint Fire District rules and regulations. As long as you are willing to learn and would like to see what it is really like to be a firefighter and/or EMT, a wonderful life experience in Explorers is waiting for you. |
