BATURA GLACIER
Sixty Five kilometers long
Batura Glacier is the second longest after Siachen
Glacier. Most of the trek is an easy stroll along the
Batura Glacier, walking through the flowers and green patches. The only
difficult part to negotiate is the crossing of glacier. On the trek we have an
opportunity to meet with nomadic Wakhi people with their cattle's for grazing in
green meadows and pastures. You may find several yaks while trekking as they use
to go in higher areas during summer.
The Batura Glacier is the most accessible of the giant Karakoram glaciers. From the KKH it stretches west about 56 km with more than 10 peaks over 7000m towering above. The trek is one of the finest in the Karakoram with beautiful scenery, and no major difficulties. Most of the trek is through ablation valleys along streams, with almost no steep sections. The pastures of Lupdur (3700m), the farthest point most trekkers go, are reached after four or five days, allowing ample time for acclimatization.
Views of the six Batura peaks and the huge ice falls from them to the glacier below are among the more remarkable mountain scenes anywhere in the Karakoram. Spendingfime with the Passu people and their yaks in the pastures allows a glimpse into their unique way of life. Although the trek crosses the glacier twice, the crossings are less difficult than most glacier crossings. Those with less time or disinclined to undertake the glacier crossings can walk up the south margin of the Batura Glacier, through ablation valleys and pasture settlements used by Hussaini villagers, to the last huts at Maidun and return by the same route. This is a pleas-ant three to four day trek, but does not give views of the Batura wall.
