film: narrative?

Parallax Error

>>back to contents

Parallax Error is a short film made as an experiment in narration. Shot in two hours on 8mm film, and edited solely in-camera with a 1:1 shooting ratio. Parallax Error attempts to capture a chunk of time. Two and half mundane minutes of existence which, as a script, has no resolution, but as a film seems to find.

Manual Fades, Stop Motion, and Slow Motion camera modes were all used. Lock-down tripod shots and a cable release were used a lot to get away from the shaky hand-held super8 look.

In-Camera editing poses unique and challenging problems, each shot was run through three times in succession before being shot the fourth time. This allowed me time to refine the scene through feedback given to the cast and crew while still being swift and maintaining an air of spontaneity.

Sound was composed before having seen the film, using a vague shot list written during shooting. The sound composition in this sense is interesting because particular sounds happen before or after the events that they should be linked to This creates a surreal, disconnection to the piece..

The opening credits were shot using a glass matte box, with letraset applied to the glass to provide the text .
