A Brief History Of Sawantwadi-State Ruling Family.

The ancestor of ruling house of Sawantwadi,mangal or maga sawant came in this area of South konkan along with an army of the viayananagarking in the middle of the 16th century . the ancestor manga Sawant dierctly related to a great Sisodiya family or Udyapur.His head headquarter were formely at the fort of Gandhravgad in changed thasil and he had the title of chand  gudhadigati.After deafting tyhe local chiefs in south kokan he established himself in the village of Hodavada(20Km from sawantwadi)which is now in Vengurla Tahisal.He died at Matha(22 km from Sawantwadi).A Chattri is build up there which is also known as mangalyacha matha.His descendent moved to the village of Otavane which is about 10 km away from Sawantwadi.The gadi of Sawant-Bhonsale dynasty was founded there by Khem-Sawant in 1627.
