Mars is the fourth planet in our solar system. Mars rotational period and seasonal cycles are very similar to our Earth. It was first observed by Galileo in 1609. In 1877 Italian astronomer Giovanni Schiaparelli used a 22cm telescope to produce the first detailed map of Mars. He noticed long straight line on the Martin surface and called them canali. He gave names of famous rivers to each of them. The term canali was mistranslated as canals prompting speculation of Martian irrigation engineering. Since then many have speculated on the possibility of life and Earth like atmosphere with water.
Then in 1976 Viking I Mars orbiter sent 2 photos of frame F035A72 and F070A13. These 2 frames started a completed different aspect of Mars as Hoagland and others interpreted the "Face", D&M Pyramid, the Fort as proof of a past civilization of Mars.
