And now for something completely different….
As librarians, staying in shape is often a struggle. Sedentary library work is not often conducive to good cardiovascular health. Time outside of work is limited by the many commitments of our day to day lives. While, going to the gym becomes a depressing safari to witness the Olympic orchestrations of humans not found in nature. Currently, I have the look and feel of a pregnant man in his third trimester. Something must be done. The best solution would be to combine our work with some sort of physical endurance. Many jobs provide a great deal of exercise by utilizing the tools of the trade. A day at work is a day of improving cardiovascular health. Unfortunately, modern white collar life does not often allow for this added “bonus” of the workday. But alas, I believe that the solution to our worries lies right in front of us. It is a tool so ubiquitous, so necessary to our daily existence as water is to life. It is the humble book cart that will lead us to our salvation. Book carts are teh unappreciated, unpimped iron and wood workhorses that allow us to move mountains of library material with the greatest of ease. These can help us to work our way to better fitness. Before we get started, some words of caution. Book cart fitness is not for the timid or the meek (meek?) what the heck is meek? and should be attempted only with the utmost caution and parental supervision. Read the following guidelines before continuing any further. 1. There are many types of bookcart and not all are suitable for a fitness regimen. Make sure and choose a sturdy steel or wood bookcart that is able to support considerable weight and pressure. 2. If you are a member of library administration like me, make sure and have at least two members of the support staff available as advisors. They actually know how the library works and what is going on and will keep you from messing things up more than you already have. 3. If you are actually a library director or other form of management, make sure and have a parent or guardian present or a signed release absolving them of all liability for your actions. 4. Contact your organizations human resources, OSHA or safety officer to make sure they are on hand when you actually attempt some of these exercises. If will make writing up any incident report much quicker and easier. 5. Don’t try this at home. The fitness enthusiasts in this video are seasoned experts. Try it at work where you can file a workman’s comp claim.
