James Daniel Webb was City Engineer for the city of Birmingham for many years and he was a
good one. Mr Webb's good and faithful service in an important position is appreciated by
the people of Birmingham. It is recognized away from home, also, as an honor just bestowed
upon Mr Webb attests. Tuesday night our city engineer received a medal from the American
Public Works Association at a banquet of the Public Works Congress of Detroit. Mr Webb is
one of a number of veteran engineers and public works officials to whom medals were
awarded by the association at this meeting. These veterans were thus honored in the
presence of several hundred engineers and other public works officials from all over the
United States. Birmingham is naturally pleased over this honor to its city engineer. And
this is a good time to make a suggestion which has been considered for some time. It is
that Birmingham should honor Mr Webb in some appropriate way for the remarkable
engineering performance which he gave in directing the building of the city's industrial
water supply system. This huge project, so vital to the city's future, owes much to Mr
Webb's skill as an engineer. His name should be given to some part of this project - as a
suggestion, to the big dam which impounds the industrial water supply, creating a
beautiful lake winding for miles through the hills of Blount County. Why not name it Webb
Dam?

William was not of age when his father Benjamin died in 1852. In his will, Benjamin made
his wife of five years, Teresy, Executrix and Charles Powell, cousin to his first wife,
Executor. William Said his 'Uncle Charles' Powell never cheated him out of a dime. He was
always square with him about his inheritance. In Benjamin's Will, he left his son, William
W. a negro man by the name of Hilliard about eighteen years old. Mrs. Pearl Woodruff
Langley, granddaughter of William, told of this incident concerning the old slave,
Hilliard. "When Grandpapa was twenty-one years old he inherited a slave, Hilliard.
After his marriage he moved to Macon County to be near his wife's people. The slave
Hilliard, remained with the family while William was away during the war and even after
the war closed. During Reconstruction a negro broke into Grandma's house to attack her.
Her dog bit him on the hand when he was so close that blood got on her gown. She was
terrified and slipped her very young son, Wiley Eugene, out the door to go to his Uncle
Giles Webb for help. To her great relief she heard Hilliard running to her assistance
saying, 'Miss Mary, I'se a-coming!'" He and his decendants were faithful members of
this Webb family. Years later Hilliard's grandson nursed Wiley Eugene Webb, Sr. in his old
age and during his last illness. When the Yankee's would come near the home, Mary would
take a team of horses and supplies into a swamp near a spring and got lost. It was a
couple of days before she found her way out of that swamp. William was in the Confederate
States Army, Company D 1st. Regiment Brigade, !st division Georgia State Troops. Enlisted
April 1862. Killed by Thomas F. McGarity January 12, 1864. William is buried at Richmond
Virginia. Thomas McGarity was a substitute for J.H. Flowers. He was transferred to Co. C,
8th Regt. Ga. Calvary, July 11, 1864. Was received in Washington DC as a confederate
deserter, February 21, 1865, where he took oath of allegiance to the US government and was
furnished transportation to New York City, NY.

A Webb for Company D 7th Georgia Cavalry C.S.A who enlisted December 23, 1863, was
captured June 11, 1864 at Louisa Court House. He arrived at Fortress Monroe at Point
Lookout MD on June 20, 1864. He was transfered to Elmira NY on July 25, 1864. He arrived
at Elmira on July 28, 1864 and died there, September 14, 1864 of chronic Diarrhoea.

Clyde Cecil Webb was employed as a rural mail carrier out of the Delia Post
Office (Limestone County, Texas) and was transferred to the Prairie Hill Office when a
rural route was established in that community. He served as rural carrier there for forty
years. Upon his retirement the route was divided between the Coolidge and Mount Calm Post
Offices. This made Clyde the only rural carrier that Prairie Hill ever had. During this
era some patrons could neither read nor write and Mr Webb often took the time to read
their letters, make out orders and read their incoming mail. During World War II when
families received letters from their sons and husbands on a Sunday, Clyde would deliver
them that day, knowing of their fears and concerns. He was not only their mail carrier but
he was also their friend. There were no gravel roads in the Praire Hill community during
the early years and when it rained the roads became impassable for cars. Mr Webb would
then ride a horse and often walked miles to see that people on his route received their
mail.

Elma Davis Webb was the second of five children born to Jim Webb and Minta Farnsworth. He
was born in Limestone County, Texas on July 12, 1893. Elma was married to Lena Faye
McCurdy on September 21, 1923. They had two sons: Elma Woodrow (Woodie) born June 4, 1924
in Haskell County, Texas and Billy Rex born September 15, 1925 in Haskell County. Elma
Webb, his wife Lena and their sons, Woodie and Billy Rex were the only members of the Webb
family who lived in Yoakum county. They lived just north of the old Lovington Road about
one and one-half miles west of Plains (on section 425). Elma Davis Webb died in May 1953.
He was preceeded in death by his son Woodrow who died November 25, 1947. Lena Faye opened
the first drug store in Denver City in 1936. It was named City Drug and was located on the
northeast corner of what is now Main and Second Streets. The Post Office was located in
this building and Dr. Lauf had his office there also. The Webbs then had their home moved
to Plains. It was located north of the Courthouse near the draw. Lena Faye later had the
house moved to Denver City. It became the office for the LaVista Lodge at 1007 North Main
which she owned and operated for many years. After Elma and Lena were married and before
they moved to Yoakum county they lived at Haskell where their two sons were born. They
farmed land which adjoined the land that his brother, Oran and his wife Stella, were
farming and their house was north from Oran and Stella's house about a mile. Both brothers
had purchased land from their father, Jim Webb.
Elma married Lena Fay MCCURDY on Sep 21 1923. Lena was born on Nov 4 1905 in Tarrant
County, Texas. She died on Apr 2 1997 in Kingsland, Llano County, Texas and was buried on
Apr 4 1997 in Marble Falls, Travis County, Texas.
In December 1984 Lena wrote: "We moved to Yoakum county in either '31 or '32 - in
January and it was a cold and cloudy day. I'll never forget it, from Brownfield to Plains
it was a dirt road, so much sand we could hardly get through at times. When we finally got
to the farm about night, the house was full of sand and so cold, first thing we did was
put up a wood stove and get a fire going. Then a couple of beds. Don't remember what we
ate but am sure that it wasn't much. Took the kids to school next morning and then back to
cleaning the house and getting the furniture in. The population of Plains was about 300
and there were no paved roads in the county, one telephone in town in the back of the
grocery store. No entertainment of any kind, occasionally some rancher would have a dance
and we would attend once in a while. This was during the depression. We had enough to eat
but no money to spend. Of course everyone was in the same boat so we didn't think much
about it, but I was happy when they struck oil in the south part of the county, on section
392 I think, and we moved there in 1940, had the only drug store for some time, had a
pharmacy and a liquor store in the back, sold by prescription only. Some people thought it
was sinful to sell liquor, but I didn't care. We made a lot of money and the oil field
rough necks, and also the big shots bought a lot of it. Anyway I was tired of not having
money and doing without. So I just kept on selling whiskey. Elma worked in the Post Office
during some of this time. In 1942 the State Legislature passed a law against selling
liquor by prescription and so that was the end of that era."
Lena Faye Ballenger, 91, of Kingsland, died April 2, 1997. Funeral services
were held Aril 4, at 10:30 A M at Trinity Episcopal Church with Rev Bob Talbert
officiating. Burial followed at Lakeland Hills Memorial Park under the direction of
Waldrope-Hatfield-Hawthorne Funeral Home. She was born September 4, 1905 in Tarrant
County. She moved to Kingsland in 1976 and was a homemaker. She was a member of the
Trinity Episcopal Church in Marble Falls and a former member of the American Legion
Auxilliary. She is survived by her son Billy Rex Webb and wife Geraldine of Austin and
sister Geraldine Hancock and husband George of Lovington NM. She was preceded in death by
two husbands, Elma Davis Webb in 1953 and Lawrence Ballenger in 1987 and son Woodrow Webb
in 1947.

field salesman of Tahoka, Texas was killed instantly and Frank Stuart, Jr. 19 was in
Tahoka clinic with a possible skull fracture following a head-on collision on the
Tahoka-Post highway tonight. The crash occurred nearly two miles east of Tahoka on the
Tahoka-Post highway. Sheriff Sam Floyd of Lynn county went to the scene and found that a
1946 model light car driven by Webb, an employee of Hughes Tool Company had been going
west toward Tahoka. A 1936 light two-door sedan driven by Stuart had been headed east
toward Post. Both men were alone."

From the Haskell Free Press newspaper April 8,1948."Oran E Webb, 50, prominent
Haskell farmer and resident here for thirty years died at the family home six miles east
of Haskell on Sunday at 10:15 PM after being stricken with a heart attack. He had been
slightly ill for several days but his condition was not believed serious and his death
came as a distinct shock to relatives and friends. The deceased was born August 26, 1897
at Lockney in Floyd county Texas and was the son of Mr and Mrs James D Webb. He went to
Frio county as a young man and later came to Haskell county in 1918. He married Miss
Stella Stewart of Dilley Texas on March 20, 1921 and they made their home in this section
since that time. Mr Webb had been a member of the Methodist Church since he was 14 years
of age." There were two children born to their marriage, James Robert Webb, Sr. and
Mary Lou Gilleland (formerly Webb). Oran Webb died intestate and there was an
administration on his estate made in Haskell County, Texas. At the time of his death
(April 1948) he was seized and possessed of certain property which had come to him by
inheritance or gift from his family and which was considered separate property and which
consisted of a certain interest in real property which was located in Yoakum County, Texas
as well as some property located in Haskell County, Texas. Some of the property in the two
counties has produced either oil or gas as a result of exploration by various oil
companies. Oran was the first of the sons of Jim Webb to marry. He met Stella Stewart in
Dilley when his father and Grandfather Farnsworth lived there. He returned later to take
her hand. They were married on March 20, 1921 and came to live in Haskell Texas where the
Webbs had moved. Jim Webb soon moved out west but Oran and Stella set up housekeeping in
Haskell. They also had Elma and Alton living with them at the time. There was a meeting of
the Knights of the Ku Klux Klan at the O E Webb farm four miles east of Haskell on Monday
night September 29, 1924. Public lectures were given by speakers of state reputation.
Every officer of the Haskell County Klan was present. (Notice from Haskell newspaper). The
Dilley Atmosphere, which was the newspaper at Dilley, Texas, published the honor roll for
the Dilley schools on November 5, 1913 and it showed Oran Webb at the top of the honor
roll for the tenth grade with an average of ninety five.
Oran married Stella Victoria STEWART, daughter of James Robert STEWART and Mary Coral
ADAIR, on Mar 20 1921 in Dilley, Frio County, Texas. Stella was born on Sep 29 1898 in
Buda, Hays County, Texas. She died on May 15 1990 in Haskell, Haskell County, Texas and
was buried on May 17 1990 in Haskell, Haskell County, Texas.
When Oran and Stella married they went to live in Haskell where the Webbs had moved. Jim
Webb soon moved on out west but Elma and Alton stayed in Haskell. Stella remembers that
she had to cook for three men and to wash all their clothes. She did her wash on a
scrubboard at that time which made it difficult. Once the wash fell down from the
clothesline and into the mud and she had to wash it all over again. The men would not wear
their khaki work pants unless they were ironed so she had to iron all those clothes plus
carry the water from the pump to wash and to cook. She said they were all very good to her
but in looking back in later years, she didn't see how she did all that work. Oran died in
1948 and in 1965 Stella married Oscar Tooley and they resided at Haskell. Stella Webb's
Pecan Pie Recipe (makes 2 pies):1 cup butter or margarine; 1 tsp allspice; 2 cups sugar; 1
tsp cinnamon; 4 eggs; 1 cup raisins; 1 tsp nutmeg; 1 cup pecans (chopped); 2 tablespoons
vinegar. Cream butter and sugar together. Add eggs, one at a time mixing after each
addition. Add spices, raisins, pecans and vinegar. Pour into unbaked pie shells and bake
in moderate oven (350 degrees) until done (about 50 to 55 minutes).

Terry County Memorial Cemetery in Brownfield. Mr Webb died on Sunday August 21, 1983 at
Methodist Hospital, after a brief illness. He was a Brownfield city councilman and mayor
pro-tem from 1970 to 1974 and a member of the Brownfield Independent School Board from
1947 until 1954. He was a member of the Brownfield Masonic Lodge and was an elder in the
Presbyterian Church."
Alton finished high school in Haskell while living with his brother, Oran and his wife,
Stella. After he finished high school he moved to Floydada to live with his parents. He
said that the winters were so cold and the house was so drafty that his father said that
if he could ever move that he would. They would often bring newborn calves into the house
at night to shelter them from the cold.
In 1929, Alton married Melba Cornelius and they chose Brownfield Texas, to live and raise
their family. They had two children, Lanny Jim born May 1, 1935 and Emma Maurine born
November 24, 1937. Alton became a prominent member of the Brownfield business community
having the Case Tractor dealership there. He and Melba liked to travel and often went to
the Rio Grande Valley and other parts of the state. Melba became ill with lung cancer and
Alton did everything he could for her, including taking her to Greece where he had heard
there was a cure. She died in 1982 and he lived only one year more, dying almost exactly
one year after she did.
The Dilley Atmosphere, which was the newspaper at Dilley, Texas, published the honor roll
for the Dilley schools on November 5, 1913 and Alton Webb was first on the honor roll for
the third grade.
Alton married Melba M CORNELIUS on Mar 14 1929. Melba died on Aug 19 1982 in Brownfield,
Terry County, Texas and was buried in Aug 1982 in Brownfield, Terry County, Texas.
