"Some would say what kind of man lets his wife go off like I have?" said Sarah with some asperity.

"I didn't know what you were doing. At times you were at least two steps ahead of me. All I could do was try to make sure there was always somebody at hand to help and if that person had been me, the whole cover would have been blown".

"Is your job really gone?"

"Yes the company really has been taken over at a knock down price too. Peter's arrangements saw to that and it can't be reversed. However, it seems the police are keen for me to keep working with their special investigations team. This means that together with the reward that has been set up for the apprehension of these rogues, we should be just about OK. The removable hard disk Tim says you've got will wrap the whole thing up we hope".

Sarah looked over at the columns that stood to each side of the Manor gates.

"It's under the hobby horse at the top of the right hand column", she said, simply. "I somehow knew the Hobby Horse would keep it safe".

Sarah hugged him tightly as Ralph went off again to collect the drive and then she let the tears flow again.

"I want to tell you to take me home - but we don't have one any more do we?"

"We will - I promise you - and he held her so tight she could hardly breathe, and she didn't care".

The End

Epilogue

Six months later, Sarah was looking down the Somerset valley at the river as it meandered through what she now described as 'her valley of the trees'. In the farm yard down below, her two sons were playing with a young lamb that was as happy as they were to run around in then sunshine and the fresh Somerset country air.

She looked down at the reunion ring David had given her with its four diamonds, one for each member of their family and wondered if she might one day be able to persuade David to add a fifth. Later that evening, with Beth acting as baby sitter, she and David would be playing skittles with some of the locals.

Newspapers still occasionally mentioned sudden corporate crashes and each time Sarah wondered if they were as a result of one of the professors viruses or just a hangover of the lingering recession.

David travels around the country and has plenty to do in his new job. The information war still wages on and it is an ill wind that blows nobody any good.

Sarah thinks that she may one day learn to play a folk music instrument. But it will probably be a long time before she gets around to it. In her order of priorities, there can be no compromise. It is the needs of her family that come first.
