My Mission Trip
From June 30 to July 3, 2005, I was on a mission trip in Jenkins, Kentucky. God has called me to missions, and Mama suggested that I go on a mission trip to see what it was like. I was very nervous about this one, since it was my first one, but God showed me signs that it was meant to be. I prayed for strength, and not long before I left, two days in a row it poured down rain, making it VERY HARD for me to drive, BUT...God sent beautiful rainbows in the sky, making me feel so happy and secure, and making me feel even more sure that I was doing what He wanted me to do this summer.
While in Kentucky, we spent two days at a housing project, ministering to its residents. Some people were reading stories to children who came; others were doing face painting; others were doing crafts such as making bracelets or cards; still others were just playing with or talking to the children or adults who came about the Bible and about Christ. I was supposed to be involved with face painting, but as many of my friends and family know, I am EXTREMELY ignorant. I don't know how to do that, and believe it or not, I don't even know the words to "Jesus Loves Me". Therefore I just watched the other girls in charge of doing this. God did give me an opportunity to sort of witness to a girl when it came to face painting, though. The second day we were there, I saw a little girl with her mother, and the girl was crying. I stood there, wondering what was going on and what I could do to help. It turned out she was upset because she wanted her face painted. Her mom was telling her it was too late; we'd already put the stuff away. I didn't realize the stuff had been put away, but I was trying to figure out how to make this girl happy anyway. Suddenly it hit me: This is a mission trip. We're here representing God. So what if the face paint stuff has been put away. It's not too late to make this girl happy. So I went to get one of the girls doing the face painting and they took care of it, along with maybe two or three other kids who wanted theirs done too.
Besides this, I was mainly doing crafts with our pastor's wife, which was awesome. After we finished our work at the mission, we went to visit some beautiful places in the Appalachian Mountains. Photos are below.
