Gas find in Tarlac of commercial quantity, says Perez

MEDIA RELEASE

released February 13, 2002, Philippines - Manila

The natural gas discovered by a consortium led by the Philippine National Oil Company (PNOC) in Victorias, Tarlac is of commercial quantity and, if fully tapped, will boost the industrial development of Central Luzon, according to Energy Secretary Vicente Perez.

In an interview, Perez said that another plus factor in the Victorias natural gas site is that the reserve can be extracted from a depth of only 5,000 feet.

The drilling site, Perez said, is also near the industrial areas located at the Subic Bay Freeport and at the Clark Economic Zone in Pampanga. The site of the oil find lies at the foot of Mount Arayat in Central Luzon and is only 20 kilometers from the main highway, Perez added.

Perez said that in the Malampaya gas project in Palawan, natural gas deposits are being extracted from a depth of four kilometers below the sea and transported through a pipeline to Batangas, which is 500 kilometers away from the drilling platform.

It was President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo who announced the natural gas find in Victorias during an impromptu press conference in Malacanang Tuesday.

The President said that the natural gas discovery in Tarlac will be a catalyst that will spur exploration and drilling operations in the area and eventually generate economic activities in what has been considered as basically an agricultural region.

"We believe that it is about time that we further develop Central Luzon as we introduce a new industry, the natural gas industry," the President said.

Perez said that natural gas could be used as fuel for power plants, for fertilizer plants and, when compressed, for motor vehicles, including passenger buses.

What is good about natural gas, Perez said, is that when it is compressed and used to fuel motor vehicles, it will great reduce pollution, especially in Metro Manila.

On top of that, using natural gas for commercial purposes would greatly reduce our dependence on imported crude oil, thus saving millions of dollars in foreign exchange for the country.
