Tools of the Oyster Fishery
The Oyster Skiff
Used in the maritimes, this tough durable little craft are the trademark of the commercial oyster fishery, specially suited to the shallow bays, rivers and estuaries where they are found at anchor in small flocks. Manoeverable, economical, and cheap to run, these little boats are a source of pride to their builders and owners.  Generally found in lengths between 12-16ft. they are fashioned with the utmost practicality. Usually outfitted with small outboards most practically up to 25hp these dependabel and rugged flat bottomed craft are fast and their shallow draft make them excallent for passage over the huge eel grass plains during the lull of the tide, as well as around shoals during questionable passages through varying stages of the tides.
Most fisherman in this industry are navigators with an intimate and personal knowledge of their home waters, successful passages through areas where the only chart  is the map of memory and the consideration of changing factors on an ongoing expression of nature in its constant flux.
