BACKGROUND
When the Earth Alliance began the project to build its own mobile suits, the
initial work was done in conjunction with the Morgenroete research facility on the Orb space colony
Heliopolis. While Orb assisted in the
research, they had an ulterior motive: steal the data from the
Alliance to build their own mobile
suits. From the stolen data, Orb constructed three prototype Gundam Astray
units: the P01 "Gold Frame", the P02 "Red Frame" and the P03 "Blue Frame". While
Orb was able to copy the Alliance's
beam saber and beam rifle technology, they were unable to duplicate the Phase
Shift armor and compensated by making the Astrays
light and maneuverable. As with the
Alliance suits, the Astrays were equipped with hand plugs to exchange energy and
data with its carried weapons. The
Alliance and Orb used different hand
plugs, and only weapons designed for the Astray could be used without any
modifications. However, the Red Frame was capable of emitting beam energy from
its hand plugs for use as an emergency weapon.
The development of the Astray project was interrupted when ZAFT attacked
Heliopolis
on 25 January CE 71. Orb desired to keep the Astray
project secret and destroyed the Astray factory. However, a Coordinator named
Rondo Sahaku was determined to save the three units.
To that end, he downloaded the data from all the Astray
units into the Red Frame, including the latest version of the Astray operating
system. The latest version of the Astray OS allowed a Natural to pilot the suit,
similar to the OS developed later on by Kira Yamato
for the MBF-M1 M1 Astray. Following the destruction of the Astray factory, the Red Frame was discovered by Junk Guild
merchant Lowe Guele. Though the Red Frame was equipped
with standard armaments such as a beam rifle and beam saber, Lowe's weapon of
choice was his 'Gerbera Straight' katana. This standard sword was not an energy
weapon and thus did not drain power from the Red Frame's energy battery.

Straight is a sword shaped like a large katana. It was found in the debris sea

STANDARD
EQUIPMENT FOR THE MBF-P02 ASTRAY “RED FRAME”:
- COMBAT
COMPUTER W/HUD DISPLAYS: The MBF-P02 is equipped with a combat computer
that can store and analyze data during combat with hostile forces. Data
readouts and stats can be displayed either on the cockpit's HUD display or on
the dashboard monitors of the aircraft. The combat computer tracks and
identifies specific enemy targets, and has a database of over 1,000 images
stored in memory. The computer can identify and track up to 75 targets
simultaneously.
- EXTERNAL
AUDIO PICKUP: Range: 300 ft (91.5 m). A sound amplification system that
can pick up normal conversation up to 300 feet away.
- HEAT
AND RADIATION SHIELDS: Special shielding prevents the penetration of life
threatening heat and radiation. A radiation detection and alarm system are
linked with the shields and will sound an alarm if there is a rupture in the
shields and what the levels of radiation are.
- LOUDSPEAKER:
A loudspeaker system is built into the craft, which can be used to amplify the
pilot's voice up to 90 decibels.
- OPTICS:
INFRARED: Range: 2000 feet (610 m). This optical system projects a beam of
infrared light that is invisible to the normal eye, but detectable by the
mecha's sensors. The system allows the pilot to detect hidden/concealed
objects by their IR reflectiveness. The beam will be visible to anyone with IR
sensitive optics, however.
- OPTICS:
NIGHTVISION: Range: 2000 feet (610 m). A passive light image intensifier
that emits no light of its own, but relies on ambient light which is
electronically amplified to produce a visible picture.
- OPTICS:
THERMAL IMAGER: Range: 2000 feet (610 m). A passive optical heat sensor
that detects infrared radiation projected by warm objects and converts that
data into a false-color visible image. The system enables the pilot to see in
the dark, in shadows, and through smoke, and also adds a +10% bonus to pilots
using a tracking skill.
- RADIO/VIDEO
COMMUNICATION: The MBF-P02 features a radio system that allows visual
communication at close range through Minovsky Particles.
- STANDARD
SURVIVAL KIT: All Orb MS’s come equipped with a portable survival kit.
Inside the small reinforced box is a medium-sized flashlight, two hand flares,
one rocket flare, a compass, infrared distancing binoculars, a small mirror, a
pocket knife, dehydrated and concentrated food (can be stretched into a five
day supply for one person) and basic first aid items (aspirin, bandages,
disinfectants, etc.)
- TACTICAL
LIFE SUPPORT SYSTEM: The Astray R’s cockpit is pressurized, and also
provides additional air feeds to the pilot's flight suit that provides him
with pressurized breathing. The Orb flight suit also contains an upper and
lower g-suit that promotes blood circulation even during high-g turns, thus
decreasing the possibility of pilot blacking out in combat.
- SHIELD:
The Astray R carries a heavy shield with anti-beam coating (DR 40 against beam
weapons, DR 20 against conventional weapons).
- OPERATING
SYSTEM (OS): The Astray R’s initial OS was not complete when it was
fielded. Until it is upgraded, the pilot takes a -6 on all pilot checks. The
OS can be upgraded with a Use Computer check (DC 20). The check takes 20
minutes, -1 minute for each number beyond the check.
