BACKGROUND

With the outbreak of war, the Earth Alliance's Atlantic Federation began a secret project to develop mobile suits to counter ZAFT's mass-produced ZGMF-1017 GINN as well as operate free of interference from the N-Jammers. One of the first five prototype mobile suits was the GAT-X105 Strike Gundam. Whereas the other four Gundams were designed for one specific purpose, the Strike Gundam was developed to function in multiple environments with multiple configurations. These configurations came in the form of three 'mission packs' with varying armaments. Like the other prototype Gundams, the Strike Gundam was equipped with the new Phase Shift (PS) armor system. When in phase shift mode, the Strike Gundam was nearly impervious to attacks from shell-firing artillery or melee weapons. However, use of phase shift for extended periods of time was a massive drain on the battery-powered reactor. The basic version of the Strike Gundam was nearly identical to the GAT-X102 Duel Gundam's initial configuration. Armament consisted of two 'Igelstellung' vulcan guns, a 57 mm beam rifle, shield and two 'Armor Schneider' combat knives.

One of the Strike Gundam's mission packs was the 'Aile Strike', which was a high mobility backpack used for additional mobility in space, as well as for flight on Earth. The Aile's weapon configuration was identical to the standard version, except for the addition of two beam sabers. Another mission pack was the 'Launcher Strike', which featured long-distance artillery similar to that of the GAT-X103 Buster Gundam. In the Launcher configuration, the main armament was the 'Agni' 320 mm impulse cannon. The Launcher's other armaments included a weapons pod mounted on the right shoulder that featured a 120 mm vulcan gun and 350 mm gun launcher. The final mission pack for the Strike Gundam was the 'Sword Strike'. The armament of this configuration focused on melee combat and anti-ship warfare. The main armament consisted of the 'Schwert Gewehr' anti-ship sword, which measured at around 16 meters in length. This massive sword was cable of slicing apart mobile suits or seriously damaging ships. Other armaments included a beam boomerang and a 'Panzer Eisen' rocket anchor, which was similar to the 'Gleipnir' anchor used by the GAT-X207 Blitz Gundam.

While these mission packs made the Strike Gundam adaptable to new environments, constantly changing them during battle could be cumbersome. To counteract this problem, a solution was developed: the TS-MA03 Sky Grasper support fighter. While these agile fighter craft could function as fighters on their own, their main function was to deliver mission packs to the Strike Gundam in the field to allow it to change without having to return to the ship. The Strike Gundam first entered combat in CE 71 when ZAFT attacked Heliopolis in an attempt to steal all five prototype Gundams. Though ZAFT succeeded in capturing four units, the Strike Gundam was put into battle by Earth Alliance officer Murrue Ramius and civilian Kira Yamato. As a Coordinator, only Kira was able to modify the suit's incomplete operating system and use it effectively as a fighting unit. Following the destruction of Heliopolis, Kira became the Strike Gundam's default pilot and joined the crew of the Archangel. Though he regretted fighting his friend Athrun Zala, Kira eventually enlisted with the Earth Alliance military and formally became part of the conflict. With each battle, Kira gained more experience and rivaled some of ZAFT's best pilots. The Strike Gundam served as his personal mobile suit until it was severely damaged in battle by Athrun's self-destructing GAT-X303 Aegis Gundam. The Strike Gundam would be later repaired by Orb and passed on to ace pilot Mwu La Fllaga, while Kira upgraded to ZAFT's ZGMF-X10A Freedom Gundam. The Strike Gundam served as Mwu's personal mobile suit after the Archangel defected from the Earth Alliance and joined the Orb forces and Clyne Faction.

STANDARD EQUIPMENT FOR THE GAT-X105 STRIKE GUNDAM:

  • COMBAT COMPUTER W/HUD DISPLAYS: The GAT-X105 is equipped with a combat computer that can store and analyze data during combat with hostile forces. Data readouts and stats can be displayed either on the cockpit's HUD display or on the dashboard monitors of the aircraft. The combat computer tracks and identifies specific enemy targets, and has a database of over 1,000 images stored in memory. The computer can identify and track up to 75 targets simultaneously.
  • EXTERNAL AUDIO PICKUP: Range: 300 ft (91.5 m). A sound amplification system that can pick up normal conversation up to 300 feet away.
  • HEAT AND RADIATION SHIELDS: Special shielding prevents the penetration of life threatening heat and radiation. A radiation detection and alarm system are linked with the shields and will sound an alarm if there is a rupture in the shields and what the levels of radiation are.
  • LOUDSPEAKER: A loudspeaker system is built into the craft, which can be used to amplify the pilot's voice up to 90 decibels.
  • OPTICS: INFRARED: Range: 2000 feet (610 m). This optical system projects a beam of infrared light that is invisible to the normal eye, but detectable by the mecha's sensors. The system allows the pilot to detect hidden/concealed objects by their IR reflectiveness. The beam will be visible to anyone with IR sensitive optics, however.
  • OPTICS: NIGHTVISION: Range: 2000 feet (610 m). A passive light image intensifier that emits no light of its own, but relies on ambient light which is electronically amplified to produce a visible picture.
  • OPTICS: THERMAL IMAGER: Range: 2000 feet (610 m). A passive optical heat sensor that detects infrared radiation projected by warm objects and converts that data into a false-color visible image. The system enables the pilot to see in the dark, in shadows, and through smoke, and also adds a +10% bonus to pilots using a tracking skill.
  • RADIO/VIDEO COMMUNICATION: The GAT-X105 features a radio system that allows visual communication at close range through Minovsky Particles.
  • STANDARD SURVIVAL KIT: All EA MS’s come equipped with a portable survival kit. Inside the small reinforced box is a medium-sized flashlight, two hand flares, one rocket flare, a compass, infrared distancing binoculars, a small mirror, a pocket knife, dehydrated and concentrated food (can be stretched into a five day supply for one person) and basic first aid items (aspirin, bandages, disinfectants, etc.)
  • TACTICAL LIFE SUPPORT SYSTEM: The GAT-X105’s cockpit is pressurized, and also provides additional air feeds to the pilot's flight suit that provides him with pressurized breathing. The EA flight suit also contains an upper and lower g-suit that promotes blood circulation even during high-g turns, thus decreasing the possibility of pilot blacking out in combat.
  • SHIELD: The Strike Gundam carries a heavy shield with anti-beam coating (DR 40 against beam weapons, DR 20 against conventional weapons).
  • PHASE SHIFT ARMOR: The Strike Gundam is armored with Phase Shift Armor. When powered, it makes the Gundam immune to shell-firing and conventional melee weaponry (DR40). This takes 4 power per round.
  • OPERATING SYSTEM (OS): The Strike Gundam’s initial OS was not complete when the Strike Gundam was fielded. Until it is upgraded, the pilot takes a -6 on all pilot checks. The OS can be upgraded with a Use Computer check (DC 20). The check takes 20 minutes, -1 minute for each number beyond the check.
