BACKGROUND
With
the outbreak of war, the Earth Alliance's Atlantic Federation began a secret
project to develop mobile suits to counter ZAFT's
mass-produced ZGMF-1017 GINN as
well as operate free of interference from the N-Jammers. One of the first five
prototype mobile suits was the GAT-X102 Duel Gundam. As the first prototype, the
Duel Gundam served as a testbed for the GAT-X103 Buster
Gundam, GAT-X105 Strike
Gundam and GAT-X207 Blitz
Gundam. As a basic mobile suit, the Duel Gundam was designed for close
combat. The armament consisted of two beam sabers, 'Igelstellung' Vulcan guns and a combination high-energy beam
rifle/grenade launcher. Like the other prototype Gundams, the Duel Gundam was
equipped with the new Phase Shift (PS) armor system. When in phase shift mode,
the Duel Gundam was nearly impervious to attacks from shell-firing artillery or
melee weapons. However, use of phase shift for extended periods of time was a
massive drain on the battery-powered reactor.
In January CE 71, the Duel
Gundam was stolen by ZAFT pilot Yzak Joule during
ZAFT's assault on the neutral colony
Heliopolis.
Following the escape of the Earth Alliance battleship Archangel,
Yzak and his Duel Gundam would continue to harass the
Archangel's
crew during the later period of the war. During one battle with Kira Yamato's Strike Gundam, the
Duel Gundam was heavily damaged and Yzak's face was
scarred. Afterwards, ZAFT upgraded the Duel Gundam to the "Assault Shroud" mode.
With this upgrade, extra armor plates were fitted over the main body, along with
several new weapons. These weapons included a 5-barrel missile pod launcher on
the left shoulder, as well as a 115mm "Shiva" railgun on the right shoulder.
With his upgraded mobile suit, Yzak vowed to get
revenge on Kira for the scar he received. However, at
the war's end in November CE 71, Yzak assisted the
Clyne Faction in defending the PLANTs and was able to destroy both the GAT-X252 Forbidden
Gundam and GAT-X370 Raider
Gundam.

STANDARD
EQUIPMENT FOR THE GAT-X102 DUEL GUNDAM:
- COMBAT
COMPUTER W/HUD DISPLAYS: The GAT-X102 is equipped with a combat computer
that can store and analyze data during combat with hostile forces. Data
readouts and stats can be displayed either on the cockpit's HUD display or on
the dashboard monitors of the aircraft. The combat computer tracks and
identifies specific enemy targets, and has a database of over 1,000 images
stored in memory. The computer can identify and track up to 75 targets
simultaneously.
- EXTERNAL
AUDIO PICKUP: Range: 300 ft (91.5 m). A sound amplification system that
can pick up normal conversation up to 300 feet away.
- HEAT
AND RADIATION SHIELDS: Special shielding prevents the penetration of life
threatening heat and radiation. A radiation detection and alarm system are
linked with the shields and will sound an alarm if there is a rupture in the
shields and what the levels of radiation are.
- LOUDSPEAKER:
A loudspeaker system is built into the craft, which can be used to amplify the
pilot's voice up to 90 decibels.
- OPTICS:
INFRARED: Range: 2000 feet (610 m). This optical system projects a beam of
infrared light that is invisible to the normal eye, but detectable by the
mecha's sensors. The system allows the pilot to detect hidden/concealed
objects by their IR reflectiveness. The beam will be visible to anyone with IR
sensitive optics, however.
- OPTICS:
NIGHTVISION: Range: 2000 feet (610 m). A passive light image intensifier
that emits no light of its own, but relies on ambient light which is
electronically amplified to produce a visible picture.
- OPTICS:
THERMAL IMAGER: Range: 2000 feet (610 m). A passive optical heat sensor
that detects infrared radiation projected by warm objects and converts that
data into a false-color visible image. The system enables the pilot to see in
the dark, in shadows, and through smoke, and also adds a +10% bonus to pilots
using a tracking skill.
- RADIO/VIDEO
COMMUNICATION: The GAT-X102 features a radio system that allows visual
communication at close range through Minovsky Particles.
- STANDARD
SURVIVAL KIT: All EA MS’s come equipped with a portable survival kit.
Inside the small reinforced box is a medium-sized flashlight, two hand flares,
one rocket flare, a compass, infrared distancing binoculars, a small mirror, a
pocket knife, dehydrated and concentrated food (can be stretched into a five
day supply for one person) and basic first aid items (aspirin, bandages,
disinfectants, etc.)
- TACTICAL
LIFE SUPPORT SYSTEM: The GAT-X102’s cockpit is pressurized, and also
provides additional air feeds to the pilot's flight suit that provides him
with pressurized breathing. The EA flight suit also contains an upper and
lower g-suit that promotes blood circulation even during high-g turns, thus
decreasing the possibility of pilot blacking out in combat.
- SHIELD:
The Duel Gundam carries a heavy shield with anti-beam coating (DR 40 against beam weapons, DR 20 against conventional weapons).
- PHASE
SHIFT ARMOR: The Duel Gundam is armored with Phase Shift Armor. When
powered, it makes the Gundam immune to shell-firing and conventional melee
weaponry (DR40). This takes 4 power per round.
- OPERATING
SYSTEM (OS): The Duel Gundam’s initial OS was not complete when it was fielded. Until it is upgraded, the pilot takes a -6 on all
pilot checks. The OS can be upgraded with a Use Computer check (DC 20). The
check takes 20 minutes, -1 minute for each number beyond the check.
