In WWII the US Miltary needed a new weapon for troops. This weapon was desinged to keep the trenched in Machine guns at bay and allow enough time for other troops to get into the trench and take out the ememy.(of course we all know it was very dangerous to run up against a bunkered in machine gun ;-) Special forces units used these guns in WWII.
