THE LIFE OF THE BUDDHA, THE DHAMMA, THE SANGHA

Time :  3 hours

  1. There are 9 questions in this paper, divided into sections A, B and C.
  2. Candidates are required to answer 2 questions from each section.
  3. Answer should be to the point.

SECTION A

  1.     A Buddha has 80 major characteristic in Him. What are they? What are the Paramis that He had done in His previous life as a Bodhisatta. Please give an illustration from the Jataka Story to reveal His major characteristics during His lifetime.

  2.  

The Buddha was known as a 'Great Teacher'. Please elaborate The Nine Virtues of the Buddha. Please explain clearly on each virtue.

  3.  

Discuss fully, what the Buddha in His 45 years of Ministry. How His efforts had paved the way for the spread of the Dhamma after His Mahaparinibbana until the present day. Discuss.

SECTION B

  4.  

The Buddha said, "Transient are all conditioned things, when this, with wisdom, one discerns, then one is disgusted will ill, this is the path to purity". Explain clearly how a person practice dhamma came to realization with wisdom of the verses said by the Buddha.

  5.  

What are the Seven Factors of Enlightenment? Explain how this Seven Factors of Enlightenment will lead us to the realization of Nibbana.

  6.  

Before the Buddha attained Mahaparinibbana, His last advice to His Sangha : "Vaya Dhamma Sankhara, Appamadena Sampadetha". Please explain clearly how a person practices dhamma accompanying by meditation comes to realization of enlightenment and with the wisdom of understanding of the verses as stated above.

SECTION C

  7.  

Narrate clearly the principle events in the life of Ven. Mahakassapa Thero from the ordination of Bhikkhu until his last day of Nibbana.

Under what are the qualities and virtues did Ven. Ananda Thero have to undertake and serve the Buddha as His 'Upatthayaka'(attendant monk). Explain.

  9.  

Describe how the Arahant Sariputta came to understand and accept the Buddha's teaching as uttered in the verses by Arahant Assaji and elaborate some major incidents to show that he was filial piety son before he attained Nibbana.
