Santa
Fe has been an art town since the late 1800s and a tourist destination
since the 1920s. Over a million visitors come each year, and
the sense of place is powerful that some decide to stay. The
readers of a top travel magazine (Conde Nast Traveller) regularly
rate Santa Fe as one of the most desirable cities to visit in
the world. Its art galleries are the third best in the country
(American Style readers), and it has the third largest art market
in dollar terms. Its among the top ten places to retire
in the country (Money Magazine) and in the top fifty important
high-tech locales of the world (Wired). Its restaurants
and chefs are regularly featured in magazines. And no wonder
Santa Fes Mark Miller (the celebrated chef and owner
of Coyote Caf) invented modern Southwest cuisine, and
several Santa Fe chefs have built national reputations with their
own inventive styles.
In addition to its renowned summer festivals,
Santa Fe is home to a fall new jazz festival, two theatres specializing
in independent and foreign films (in addition to 20 other screens),
and a film festival. The city boasts some of the countrys
best instruction in flamenco and tango, and the Aspen Santa Fe
Ballet Company now has performances throughout the year.
Then theres Spanish Market in July,
and the world famous Indian Market in mid-August. The countrys
largest hot-air balloon festival in nearby Albuquerque. A unique,
hauntingly beautiful Christmas tradition that turns Santa Fe
into a city of softly glowing light. A down home, one-of-a-kind
fiesta weekend in which a forty-foot-high puppet, representing
Old Man Gloom is burned to make way for renewal.
And lots more.
