A Mysterious Confrontation
Aidan took a walk around the school grounds that day at lunch. Something drove him to walk. He strolled lazily by the art building whistling an Oasis tune called 'She's Electric'. Out of nowhere, he felt an arm grab him and pull him out of his little world. He found himself in a tiny nook of the building staring into the electric eyes of Corinne. "What's with you and being so damn forceful? Won't you ever let the man actually be the man?"
"Shhh!" she hissed. "I have to talk to you and Herbert. This is the only place where we won't be disturbed." She pointed upwards to the brick wall. "No windows."
"What's so important?"
"I'll explain once Herbert's here, but you have to get him."
"Me? Why me?"
"Because they know me. They'll think that I just came around to interrupt their class time. At least you can get him out without them questioning everything you do."
"Okay, so you want me to bring him here?" She nodded. "Right... where is he now?"
"Wood shop. The little building with a chimney over there," she said pointing to a small building behind the math and science building.
"Right, be right back." He left his stuff with her and jogged off to get Herbert. It wasn't hard at all because the teacher wasn't even watching his students. In fact, he was in another room watching the latest rugby match on TV. "Herbert," Aidan whispered when he was able to find him. "We have to go."
"Eh?" asked Herbert over the noise of the saws and drills.
"We have to talk now," Aidan shouted. "Get your stuff."
Aidan brought him back to Corinne and leaned up against the wall. "So what are we doing?" asked Herbert.
"I had a dream last night," said Corinne expecting that to explain everything.
"...... So?"
"So, I need to take a look at your little book again."
"Won't you even give us a hint to what your getting at?" asked Aidan.
"I dreamt that I was someone else. Some woman with long hair, but my face. And she was sleeping with a guy that... er..."
"What?" asked Aidan noticing that she was giving him an odd stare.
"I called him Alexander," she said.
"Is this the same Alexander?" asked Herbert.
"You mentioned that I called you Alexander when I was in the hospital. Well, this guy -- when I saw him in the reflection of the mirror I looked into... he was you."
"Me?" asked Aidan.
"Except you had black scraggly hair... and no shirt... and you looked a little older, but that's all."
"Him?" asked Herbert. "Why would you be having a dream about him?"
"Are you sure this is significant? It could be that you remember me saying that you called me Alexander and put us both into this weird dream that creeped you out."
"I don't care what you say about this, I want to see that book," said Corinne.
"Why?"
"When I first looked at it, I had the strange urge to look in the back of it, but decided not to. I don't know why, but I want to see what's there."
"There's nothing but old drawings and portraits of old dead people," said Aidan.
"But she's right, there might be some importance. These people were once very important... probably."
"Fine, let's get it then. Herb's place around six then?" asked Aidan. Herbert and Corinne nodded. "Great, now let's get on with our day."
Herbert left, going straight back to wood shop, and Corinne started to grab her bag. Aidan stopped her, holding his arm up against the wall to bar her path. "What are you doing?" she asked.
He leaned in close, leaving his arm in place to keep her pinned in the corner. Corinne saw his eyes gleam with mischief. "I think it's about time for me to be a little aggressive, don't you?" he asked. He gently kissed her, barely touching their lips together.
"I see," she said. "You want to be the dominant and not dominated, correct?" He smiled in reply. "Right, I guess I can let you wear the pants... for a little while." She leaned back into the wall and let him brush his lips across her skin. He was so gentle and every touch caused goose bumps. She turned and kissed him, opening her mouth wide and pushing her tongue in to meet his, but he pulled back. "What?"
He chuckled quietly. "You kiss like the only goal to it is sex. Don't you kiss just to get more intimate with the person?"
"How can you get more intimate than sex?"
"Intimacy isn't sexual -- although in some cases it is. Real intimacy is knowing people through and through. To know what the person laughs at, what they hate, what their favorite song is... what turns them on," he said, leaning in closer. "I am man enough to admit: nothing turns me on more than knowing how to turn on my partner."
"And how does one figure out that that's what excites them?"
"I actually learned during a relationship with a cheerleader back home. Most girls like to talk -- and I seem to be the only guy that shares that with them -- and she told me everything that she ever liked. Ironically, the relationship only lasted about two months, but she did enjoy our time together. Knowing what your partner likes and doesn't like can make things easy and a lot more pleasing to both of you."
She stared at him in awe. "The untrained eye would think you were a poof, you know."
"Poof?"
"Homosexual. The way you talk about dating... it's like you have an insight into women's minds. But remember, not all of us think this way."
"Oh, I learn something new everyday," he purred.
He began to kiss her neck softly, and it was better than anything Alex had ever done to her before. She closed her eyes and tugged on the edge of his shirt, playing with the hem between her fingers. His very breath on her neck made her feel so good that she couldn't believe it. It seemed to last forever. His lips and tongue barely touched her skin, gliding smoothly over her neck and collarbone, making her smile involuntarily. She found herself reaching up to his head and combing her fingers through his soft golden brown hair. She opened her eyes for a split second, but soon opened them again and froze.
Aidan noticed and asked, "What's wrong?" He stood up straight and looked back to see what she was staring at.
"Do you see that?" she asked, pointing discreetly off to the side of the tech building.
"See what? I can't see--" he trailed off. He suddenly did see what had caught her attention.
There was a shadow like figure standing just to the side of the building. It looked like a woman in a dark cloak, the hood pulled up over her head to hide herself. Corinne whispered, "Isn't that the kind of person Herbert described? One of the people that took the book for destruction?"
"Yeah," breathed Aidan. "Should we do something?"
"Like what?!" she hissed.
"I don't know! Go someplace else? Secretly get Herbert and show him? Maybe, confront her?"
"Confrontation. I don't think I want that. And I think that everything you just said is out of the question."
"Why?"
"Because she's watching us."
Aidan looked again at the figure and noticed that there was no way to tell which way it was looking. "But... how can you tell?"
"Just a feeling."
"Then what do you suggest we do?"
She stared at him speechless. She could only gape at him in complete confusion. "......... Uh..."
"If you can't think of anything, maybe we should just go back to class?"
"God, I never thought I'd say this: Yes, going to class sounds like a good idea." They picked up their bags, Aidan took Corinne's hand, and they started walking away from the figure towards the main building. Corinne suddenly noticed the complete absence of people outside and thought it was a bit strange. Aidan's pace slowed beside her and she looked to see what caused it.
A woman in a black cloak stood in front of them seeming to hover off the ground. "What the hell?" gasped Corinne, thinking they'd just left this woman behind. Aidan squeezed her hand and pulled her toward the soccer field in back. "Where the hell'd she come from?"
"I'm not sure we wanna stay and find out. Come on." They ran to the field in hope to escape the cloaked woman, yet she was there again behind the athletic shack. Aidan looked back and saw that the woman was both in front and behind them. "They're multiplying! Everywhere!"
"This way!" cried Corinne, yanking him to the side and diving behind a recently dormant lawnmower. The two cloaked women hastened their advance and appeared on opposite sides of the soccer field. They seemed to be in a race to reach Aidan and Corinne first. The women practically flew at each other. Corinne and Aidan cursed under their breath... several times. "What do they want??"
"How the hell should I know?"
"It was rhetorical, Aidan!"
The women flew at each other, stopping a foot apart in front of Corinne and Aidan. They glared evilly at each other, then looked upon Corinne. The woman in dark gray spoke in some strange language, yet Corinne seemed to understand parts of it. "Tula yassen amin, Coriadae," she said, reaching out her hand.
"No, Coriadae," said the woman in black, pulling her hood off her head. She had long beautiful blonde hair and hauntingly familiar gray eyes. "Do not listen to her. She'll poison you with lies!"
"Dina!" cried the woman in gray, waving her other hand at her. The woman in black raised her arms in defense too late as she flew back and hit the ground with a dull thud.
"What the hell do you want?!" cried Corinne.
The woman in gray turned her attention back to Corinne and pulled back her hood. Her dark gray eyes pierced into Corinne's and made her shiver. "I see you do not speak the ancient language as you should. That is disappointing for such a so-called powerful priestess as yourself."
"Antolle ulua sulrim," muttered the woman in black getting to her feet.
"Mani ume lle quena?" asked the woman in gray, turning to her in anger.
"Wethrinaer, unguer. Caela ie'lle!" cried the woman in black.
"Koron en' naur!" cried the other, launching a fireball from her hands.
"Ram en' ondo!" A stone wall rose from the ground to block the fireball.
"Holy shit!" cried Aidan, scurrying backward on his hands and knees.
Corinne stood up and watched it all in awe. They summoned powers she'd only seen in movies, firing against each other in such anger, yet both seemed to have the same objective. Behind her, Aidan sat up and called to her, but she didn't really hear him. The wall disintegrated and suddenly the woman in black stared at Corinne with a look of urgency. She held up her hand pointing at her and cried, "Entula a' moinayamen'!" A white shockwave shot from her hand and hit Corinne hard in the stomach, knocking her backwards several feet past Aidan, the wave following her, until she landed with a smack on the hillside.
Aidan was knocked backwards as part of the wave grazed the top of his head. He lay on the ground, staring at the swirling sky above him. He sat up, head spinning more violently, placing his hands on his temples to stop the whirling. He heard the woman in gray hiss, "Damn you, Verdai!" She twirled, cape flying around her, and disappeared in a cloud of darkness. The woman in black sank down, letting her feet touch the ground as she heaved a sigh. Looking up, Aidan saw that she was staring at him.
"You must protect her, Aidan," she whispered, and vanished with a flourish.
Aidan stared at the empty space in a daze, trying to gain his bearings. His head swerved to his right, then to his left, then back to front. "Oh shit!" he cried, jumping to his feet. "Corinne! Corinne, can you hear me?" He scrambled to her side. "Corinne? Come on, wake up. Open your eyes."
Hearing leaves shuffling above him on the hill, he looked up to see Herbert scuttling down to them. "Aidan, what the hell just happened?"
"I have no idea. Help me get Corinne up."
"Mmmph," muttered Corinne before they could do anything. "Ugh... wha?"
"Corinne, you okay?" asked Aidan, lifting her head.
"What the fuck happened?" she mumbled.
"You don't remember?"
She sat up, held her head swaying a bit and said, "Not sure. Remember pain," she said, wincing and holding her stomach. She blinked a few times looking around the filed. "Wait a minute, what happened to the bitch? Scratch that, the bitches. And what did they do to me?"
"Not quite sure, but they disappeared."
"But why were there flashes of light? You could see them from the school windows."
"We'll talk in a minute. Now, let's get her inside."
