Campus Web Memoir
Ok, guys, here's the skinny. . . I'm supposed to write this for my UNIV
class as part of a reflection about the things that I've done at the University
of Maryland. U of Maryland is the best college ever, by the way!!
This means that I have to ramble on for 1-3 paragraphs about each of the 4
activities that I've done. Feel free to leave this site at any time. . .
preferably now.
OK now that that's out of the way, you are hereby warned and accountable for
your own boredom.
ACADEMIC: I went to a meeting for Pre-medical freshman or people interested
in entering the Pre-medical track but don't know a whole lot about what's
available. It was a very informal talk, the new advisor came prepared to
answer questions and it was between me and some other frat guy to ask most of the
questions. Nice, but I expected something a little more formal, but I'll take
what I can get. Oh well.
RECREATIONAL:
Ok, so far I've been to several things that are considered
"recreational". These include athletic events (football, soccer,
basketball, field hockey), Residence Hall Activities and the First Look Fair
(which was really cool just so's ya know).
- Athletic Events-- These were really cool, mainly because I was able
to watch my home team crush the opponent instead of the other way around.
I went to this really tiny high school up in the mountains, so there weren't a
whole lot of exceptionally athletic people or athletic people period. As
a result, we stank, no, scratch that. We reeked. It was horrible, but
there was an upside, we were good at baseball, like State Champions two years
running good. Booyah! But this was only one team, so Homecoming
was horrible because we knew we were going to get crushed. And we did,
it was just a fact of life. Anyway, enough rambling about that, back to
what I was talking about. Oh, right, we win. So, it's really nice
to be able to go to a game and expect a good game, or at least a close one
instead of a massacre. And team spirit, let me tell you! Maryland is one
of THE worst teams for spirit at games. We make fun of people,
specifically the players, coaches, refs. . . anybody. It's really
horrible. And as a player I know how it feels to try to concentrate on a
game with idiots yelling that "YOU SUCK!" every time you make a play.
Argh, I really don't like it sometimes, especially when the players are good.
But, the good comes with the bad, so I guess I'm just going to have to roll
with the punches. Welcome to the real world.
- Residence Hall Activities-- RHA's are always really fun,
especially when you get along with your floor people. For these I went
to Margarita Madness where we told drunken stories and drank non-alcoholic
alcoholic beverages (don't ask). Somehow, Pina Colatas are meant to be drunk
with alcohol, not that I would know anything about what alcohol tastes like.
(: The second thing that I did was decorate for Halloween. A word
to the wise: if you're in the decorating contest, make a skit or dance to
"Thriller". . . it wins every time. That's what happened to us as well
in La Plata. grrrrr! We lost because we didn't have "interactive"
decorations. Go figure.
- First Look Fair -- This was really neat and interesting to see all
1 million clubs and organizations that the University has to offer. And
when I say 1 million, I mean 1 million. I went to this, but didn't
really look for anything in particular. I just went because it was
there. I mean, I have a class that passes the First Look Fair, so
after class I stopped by. The coolest thing was by far the Gymkana Club.
My RA says she goes to Midnight Madness specifically for Gymkana. They
are the coolest!!! Jumping through fire, jumping over people and through fire,
jumping through fire over people and around each other. . . yeah, that's cool.
You don't know nuthin yet!
Diversity Horizons -- I went to this really cool concert for one of my
dorm neighbors, Neepa Patel. She's part of an
Indian (Indian as in India-Indian not Native American-Indian) Youth Group Thing
that does a concert every fall showcasing their talents. It was probably
the coolest thing I've ever seen. Period. End of story.
Citizenship -- I registered to vote, not much to say other than now i
can change the tide of the elections in my own infinitesimally small way.
Basically, a girl on my floor is involved with Mary Purg, which is an
organization that promotes all sorts of political things, including voter
registration, wildlife bill and the like, came to me with an assignment to get 2
people to register to vote. Needless to say, I was one of those two.
So, it was probably the LEAST painful thing that I did all semester. Yeah,
you fill out a form, send it in and wait. Doesn't take a genius to figure
it out. If you're 18, go register to vote. If you've already done
it, make sure you actually vote.
