"I'm careful, I am. It's not evident at first glance because I appear to be generous and to relate will to other people. But I know precisely how much I can give without tipping my scales. I'm pretty stable and fairly predictable.
"The Buddha said we should strive to realize that fortune goes with misfortune. To be enlightened, we need to transcend both. I kind of understand that, but mostly I'm still geared toward acquiring a fortune or other outward proof that I'm a success.
"I grasp the idea that those of us who have achieved a certain level of success need to `give back' to our communities, and in our professions, act as mentors. It is far easier for me to do that than to be benevolent to myself.
