Bethesda Terrace - Autumn
(The original line drawing was assigned on commission)
Bethesda Terrace's grand staircases overlook the lake in New York City's Central Park. The fountain sculpture was designed by Emma Stebbins in 1868, the first woman to recieve a public commission for a major work of art in New York City. Also called the Angel of the Waters, it refers to the Gospel of John in which there is a description of an angel blessing the pool of bethesda, which gave the terrace its name. The fountain was dry for decades in the mid 1900's until it was restored in 1981 by the Central Park Conservancy.
