Merychippus
Merychippus is known as the third stage in the evolution of the horse.  Though it still had three toes, the middle one was the toe relied on and was larger, with a bigger hoof.  The other two toes rededed ont he leg and were significantly smaller.  The Merychippus was the largest equine yet at a height of 40 inches.  This equine was the first to have a set of singly grazing teeth.  It developed large leg muscles which allowed it to migrate further in search of food.  The face was longer, the jaw was deeper and the eyes were set further back in the skull.  This was the first to look more like a horse.
