Evelyn Chen was born in Singapore in 1974 and graduated from RMIT University, Melbourne with a BA in Fine Art. Her performances which usually last between 8 to 12 hours at a stretch, use the body in performance to reflect the passing of time. By exploring the topic of performance art in public space in some of her works, she is contributing to the ongoing discourse which is about social space.

ARTIST'S STATEMENT
The images in this website show performances performed in Melbourne, Australia. The performances revolve round the significance of transition and transience. It proposes that the body is not just its physical space. It is made up of both mind and body, has the ability to create space and give meaning to space and therefore implicates its temporalities. The body involves itself in multiple readings and meanings. It is in constant transition from one thought to another. This implicates the importance of the present. The performing body in situ aims to extend notions of the present, with the knowledge of its temporalities, and hence the importance of making not just spaces with meaning, but meaningful spaces.
