EVITA International

INTERVIEW WITH SHARON LYNNE

Conducted by Tim Whittemore via e-mail

July 2002

Ms. Lynne played the role of Eva Perón in the 1981 South African production.

She now resides in Australia.

TW:  How did you get the opportunity to play Eva Perón?

SL:  I was very young when I auditioned for the role of Evita. In fact, the other 'well knowns' couldn't quite believe that I would have the nerve to audition…but to cut a long story short I got the role. It was a role that I had secretly yearned for and spent the good part of six months rehearsing for the audition ... I drove my friends crazy!!!

TW:  What was your favorite moment in EVITA?

SL: One of my favourite moments in the show was singing and dancing “Buenos Aires” only because it had so much passion in the music itself. It was a very all encompassing song for me to perform. [Note from Tim:  It’s one of my favorites to watch and hear!]

TW:  Is there a part in the show you found difficult to portray?

SL:  I found walking regally to mid-stage just prior to singing “Don’t Cry for Me, Argentina” a nightmare - as I was wearing these six inch heels that were “match-stick” thin and I had to use so much control not to wobble and especially not to get them caught in the cracks of the floorboards. The cast was in hysterics because what they could see (and knew) was so different to how the audience perceived this very dramatic walk from where they were sitting.

I think, for me, the most difficult part of the show to portray was the death scene. Remember I was quite young and hadn't really experienced much death around me to “take” from it. Being a perfectionist it was difficult for me to find the reality of that moment. I only had my very vivid imagination and excellent direction from George [Martin].

TW:  Do you have any interesting stories to share from any of your times on stage as Eva?

SL:  My Mum had come out from Australia to see me in the production. Unbeknown to me, one of the cast had secretly snuck my Mum backstage to watch me from the wings. It was during “Buenos Aires” when I was "spitting" (as part of the choreography) did I see my Mum in the wings. I realised then that I had spat right at her…simply because she was standing in that direction. I dare mention the amount of "corpsing" that happened on stage at that moment. But it was an "out of character" experience for me and because I take my character portrayal very seriously, I was not amused!   But AFTERWARDS...Mum and I had a good laugh! (She is no longer alive, so it is a cherished memory)

Hope you enjoy my information and stories. Tim keep the good work up. I too am a fan of the musical EVITA and I think what you have done is absolutely outstanding. Great web-site!

 Keep well,

 Regards,

 Sharon Lynne
