EVITA

an opera based on the life story of Eva Perón

1919-1952

"EVITA" is based on the life of Eva Perón, the second wife of Argentine dictator Juan Perón.  It is a story of people whose lives were in politics, but it is not a political story.  It is a Cinderella story about the astonishing life of a girl from the most mundane of backgrounds who became one of the most powerful  women her country (and indeed Latin America) had ever seen, a woman never content to be a mere ornament at the side of her husband, the president.  Her death of cancer in 1952 at the age of 33 ensured that she became a legend - it is unlikely that even Eva Perón could have sustained her level of popularity with her beloved "descamisados" (the shirtless ones) had she lived.  Perón himself lasted only a further three years in power after her death, although he did make a brief comeback as president in 1973, a remarkable achievement which sadly did little to solve Argentina's serious economic and political problems. Perón's third wife, Isabel, succeeded him as president after his death in 1974, but she is not part of our story which ends with Eva's death in 1952.
