Set in the lush environs of a deserted tropical island, this self-censored film tells the story of two shipwrecked children, Emmeline and Richard. As the kids turn into teenagers, nature takes its course. The pair falls in love and attempts to forge a life in the isolated paradise. First off, I'm going to say that The Blue Lagoon is a unique and beautiful coming-of-age film that is very inspirational. The movie is very similar to Paradise, for it shares the same theme - two adolescents in nature going through puberty together. The underwater cinematography is fantastic, but I thought that the natives were unnecessary. Unlike with the Jackal in Paradise, they added nothing to the plot and should have been removed. Also, despite that the movie has a bad reputation concerning its nudity, I thought that it was tastefully done and utterly appropriate for in a setting like that, they would either be wearing a loincloth or nothing at all. My final comment about The Blue Lagoon is that its a classic and inspirational film, albeit a bit cheesy, that deals with innocent love and sex. There are two side notes to this movie. The first is that it was originally going to be filmed sans clothes. This idea was scraped after it scared off many actors. The second is that The Blue Lagoon has been plagued with controversy since it came out. If you want to read about it click below:
