After a secret meting with Lionel, Lana is shot at the Daily Planet by a mysterious gunman. Jimmy is knocked out while studying photographs of the scene and dreams about a 1940s version of Smallville. In this version, Lana is a femme fatale who orchestrated the murder of her tycoon husband Lex, Clark works at the Daily Planet as a reporter and Lois is a sultry singer working at a bar owned by Lionel. Meanwhile, back in 2007, Clark discovers why Lana married Lex. Originally, I thought this episode was going to be like 1961 and was pleased that it wasn't. Also, since I like film noir, it was really cool to see it on Smallville. With the exception of having Jimmy get hit on the head be the transition from present day to the past, this episode was quite good. The acting and witting were quite good. Standout performances came from Michael Rosenbaum and Allison Mack. Since Clark is usually boring and Lana is so underwritten, this episode gave Tom Welling and Kristin Kreuk an opportunity to really act. Jimmy isn't a favorite of mine, but I thought that Aaron Ashmore did a stand-out performance in this episode.
