Victor lives in a small European village in the nineteenth century, where he is pledged to marry Victoria, but instead falls into an underworld where he meets the Corpse Bride. While Victor is fascinated with the wonders of the Land of the Dead, he also knows that Victoria is the woman he truly loves and he searches for a way back to his own world - the Land of the Living. This is an excellent film which is based on a Russian Jewish folktale and has the classic Romeo-and-Juliet theme. After doing several uninteresting movies, Tim Burton returns to the dark, but fanciful, animated style of The Nightmare Before Christmas with this stop-motion film. Before knowing that the movie was based on a folktale, I thought that Victor should have married the Corpse Bride instead of Victoria for she seemed more alive. I'm speaking figuratively of course. Anyway, despite the fact that Corpse Bride is the more adult of the two films, they are equal in quality and are both cult. Finally, although I don't particularly like Johnny Deep, I actually think this is one of his better roles.
