A surprise hit comedy, American Pie follows four high school friends - Jim, Finch, Kevin and Oz - through their sexually frustrated senior year as they strive for the most eagerly anticipated rite of adulthood: losing one's virginity. This wildly popular, raucous, raunchy, teenage comedy was typical of the late 1990s - the extremely "guilty pleasure" film took three rounds of censorship cuts to satisfy an R-rating. The most famous scene in the film in the entire movie is, of course, the internet scene shown below. The movie takes the two most popular stereotypes of coming-of-age films - males only think about sex and women only think about romance - but the creators of this film take it all to another level. American Pie has three-dimensional characters, who have actual depth and personality. Kevin, for example, appears to have the advantage, since he already has a girlfriend named Vicky, who may not fit the stereotype most teen comedies give the sexes. Oz, on the other hand, is a good-looking jock who is actually a nice guy. Then he meets Heather and becomes interested in music - and the girl. However, she does not seem the type to leap into bed within three weeks. Finch has no immediate prospects, though Jessica, (who is the only non-virgin of the group,) and is in a position to know if those rumors about him are true. Finally there is Jim, who is a truly hopeless case especially after his attempted seduction of beautiful Czech exchange student Nadia turns out to be a disaster. He is then convinced he can't talk to girls, even though he's just shy. However there is an annoyingly chatty band geek named Michelle and her fascinating story about her flute. Overall, this movie, which sets teenagers in high school, has more heart and soul (not to mention plot) than movies about teenagers/young adults in college. The sequels to this film, however, aren't good.
