This is a 1957 Sam Katzman production but it is worth watching!
Back in 1894 the ship Susan B landed off the coast of Africa.10 of the crew raided a native temple and stole their diamonds.However the 10 were killed.They returned to the ship as zombies, killed the crew and
scuttled the boat.Several attempts had been made over the years by others to get the diamonds but the zombies of Mora Tau murdered them all.
A salvage team led by shady George Harrison, his slutty wife Mona the Moaner,Doc Eggart and diver Jeff arrive in Pasadena, I mean Africa, to get the diamonds.They stay with Grandma Peters and her granddaughter Jan.
Well the zombies aren't too happy with this and rise up to kill off the crew.These bad boys rise out of coffins and travel by land and underwater.They can't be killed.These guys are pretty creepy all covered in
seaweed.
If the diamonds are destroyed the dead will finally rest.But who wants to destroy a fortune in diamonds?As their numbers dwindle the salvage team has a decision to make and a terrible price to pay.
Do the math here:Sam Katzman=low budget.Most of the underwater scenes weren't filmed underwater.The diving suits farted little soap bubbles in the air to make you think there is water.Pasadena doubles for the wilds of Africa.Very few sets are used.
However what this lacks in budget it makes up for in creepiness.The scenes shot in the cemetary and mausoleum are effective.The blank eyed zombies coming out of the dark are unnerving.Allison Hayes gives a great performance as the nasty wife and as a killer zombie.
