| One of the many Godzilla films directed by Jun Fukuda, Godzilla vs. Gigan is the film that made Anguirus one of the most popular Godzilla kaiju. It also brought in a new kaiju, who has become a fan favorite thanks to Godzilla: Final Wars. That kaiju is obviously Gigan. King Ghidorah also returned for another rumble with the king of the monsters and of course, Anguirus. Finally, the stock-footage full movie has finally got an official R1 DVD release in America thanks to Sony Pictures. Once again, Sony has released an excellent disc. But, thats not saying that the disc is absolutely perfect.
Video Quality: *****/***** The film is presented in its original ratio of 2.35:1 widescreen. It is also enhanced for widescreen televisions. The print is very sharp and vivid. All of the colors are presented clearly. Its a very clean print, and it only suffers from a few hairs and speckles. The only other problem the print suffers from is the fact that the stock footage has had some wear and tear apparently, seeing how it is much worse condition compared to the new footage made for Godzilla vs. Gigan. Audio Quality: ****/***** This disc has both the English dub, along with the original Japanese language with English subtitles. Both are very clear and vivid, and easy to hear. There are no real problems with either, but the English dub has a few little hisses and pops every now and then. Also, the English subtitles for the original Japanese dub are sadly dubtitles- subtitles that do not have the original Japanese dialogue, but the English dub dialogue instead. Special Features: */***** What did you expect? Sony always does an incredible job with both the video and audio portions of their Godzilla discs, but they dont often add REAL special features in. Like most of their other Godzilla discs, all there is are trailers from other products being made or released by Sony. Oh, wow! Overall: ****/***** It has superb video quality, does ok on the audio portion, but falls short in special features. Its a great disc, and I recommend it to any American G-Fan, but if they would rather have the Japanese version and can actually understand Japanese, as well as afford it, then Id recommend Tohos R2 disc. It is still a great disc, but pales in comparison to Tohos own Godzilla vs. Gigan DVD. |
