* Sometimes when I read, I like to highlite things that I wish I had written, or just things that I like. I do that alot with Rollins' books because I admire his brain and thoughtprocess so much. I've read 3 of his books now and These are some of the shorter things I've highlighted. The majority are from Smile, You're Traveling. Once I get an oppertunity to highlight more in Black Coffee Blues, and get my copy of Solipsist back, I'll add more from those. For now... enjoy. |

"If we don't plant ourselves in the front row of the present, I predict that if any of us reach old age, we'll be sitting on the front porch thinking, 'Damn, shoulda burned all the temples. Screamed, danced and dragged life through the coals."- Black Coffee Blues
"I go from Nairobi to Madagascar for a few days. That should be interesting. The tourist hand out said that if you're not into 'potential chaos and radically changing scheduales, then Madagascar might not be for you.' Shit man, it might not be for me either. I don't know how much chaos I'm really up for at this point. On the other hand, I can always go back to LA and sit. I can always go back and work at Millie's waiting on tables where the first singer of Black Flag and the singer in Thelonius Monster work. I can always get addicted to Heroin and spend the rest of my life recovering and taking it 'one day at a time' or I can go to fucking Madagascar. There's always a choice. You can always quit. You can always let one of these little actors pull you off the trail. Hack or pack. Life the fucking weight off the floor or drop it. It's all there is for you to do or not do." - Smile, You're Traveling
"Either kill or stay the fuck home." - Smile, You're Traveling
"I chose to grin and bear it, no matter what. Old Fred Nietzsche said something about mixing joy and malice. I like the idea of that blend. It's like watching Bruce Lee in Enter The Dragon. He was kicking ass and he was having a damn good time." - Smile, You're Traveling
"There's some corny song out there, Celine Dion or Mr. Bolton, one of those types with a song called 'Two Become One.' Why don't they just call it 'Two People Fucking'? - Smile, You're Traveling
"Was supposed to get out here earlier but a hurricane was in the way. It was called Bonnie. I think it's stupid when they name them with a regular name. I have talked about that before, like cfalled El Nino 'The Motherfucker' instead. I think hurricanes should be given names like 'Hurricane Syphilis' 'Hurricane Richard Millhouse Nixon,' stuff like that. These normal names are too lightweight, if you're going to do something, go all the way." - Smile, You're Traveling
"All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy. All work and no play makes Jack a mean motherfucker." - Smile, You're Traveling
"Ohio, Michigan, these are the places where the American slow death plays itself out over seasons." - Smile, You're Traveling
"Once you realize your potential, it's hard to say that you failed at something, you just realize that you didn't try hard enough or more likely, you didn't want it that bad." - Smile, You're Traveling
"Don't ever blame your short comings on others . It was only you who got you where you are right now. Deal with it." - Smile, You're Traveling
"Life is furious. It explodes in foliage and rots in damp heat. Follow that. Jump into the river that takes you to it. Otherwise life is just a pause before death." - Smile, You're Traveling
"My hand is a hello-how-do-you-do whore. It has touched many." - Smile, You're Traveling
"The truth is found right before you collapse. Not until then. The entire lesson is taught over years and learned in and instant. Don't say you know when you don't. Don't wear stripes you haven't earned." - Smile, You're Traveling
"Night time is the best. For me, night time is the only time that matters. I am alone, looking out on this amazing sea from a great height. The night is starless. A solitary gree light flashes in the distance. All around me are strange and fascinating lands. Egypt, Lebanon. I am alone and silently alive. I am a living secret making invisible history that cannot be proven. A small moment of perfection." - Smile, You're Traveling
"The british couple next to me are trying to keep time with the piped in music by banging their hands and glasses on the table hard. Their time is lousy and I want to see them bleed." - Smile, You're Traveling
"Humor without malice is like a Pat Boone record on eleven. Malice without humor is like the LAPD."- Smile, You're Traveling
