“Scott what are you doing here?” Heidi asked him once they were out in the hall. Inside all the girls were pushed up against the door with their faces on the window trying to get a better glimsp of Scott.
“I wanted to bring you an apple.” Scott held out an apple and Heidi cracked a smile.
“An apple? This looks like a really good one too. So nice and red and shiny. Thanks Scott.” She gave him a quick hug and looked back at her class. “They all like you. So I think you should go.”
“I also have something to tell you.”
“What?” Heidi wasn’t so sure she wanted to hear this.
“J is over at your flat hiring someone to come and fix your kitchen.” Heidi’s jaw dropped.
“He’s doing what?!”
“Getting your kitchen fixed.”
“Do you have your mobile?”
“Yeah, why?” Heidi pulled Scott into the classroom and handed him the stack of test papers to hand out.
“I need you to pass these out while I call J on your mobile.” Very silently at first but growing in intensity they heard what sounded like a scream coming on. They looked over at the girls and they were all in amazement. The guys on the other hand were sitting on the other side of the room just staring.
All of a sudden every girl began screaming and charging Scott. He ducked behind Heidi to try to get out of their way. “WILL ALL OF YOU PLEASE BE QUIET AND TAKE YOUR SEATS!!!!” Heidi screamed at the top of her lungs. Everyone did as they were told. “Now that’s better. I guess most of you know this is my friend Scott. He’s going to pass out your tests while I make a very important call. And I expect all of you to be nice or I’ll never let him back again.”
Everyone sat very silent and still. Scott looked at the first test and called out Elizabeth. A girl raised her hand and Scott went over and handed her the test. Meanwhile Heidi took Scott’s mobile and rang J.
“Hallo.”
“J what do you think you’re doing?”
“Excuse me?”
“Why are you getting someone to fix my kitchen? I can do it myself. I’m a big girl I don’t need you taking care of everything for me anymore.”
“Hey Heidi. I just thought I’d do it to be nice. Like you said, Beth is going to be pissed when she gets home. So I thought I’d get a headstart on your repairs.” Heidi leaned up against the wall tired and frustrated. Sure it was a nice gesture, but...Scott was doing quite a good job passing out papers. He had finished quickly and was now talking to the guys in the class about basketball. All the girls still sat staring at him.
“J, I would appreciate it if you wouldn’t do anything.”
“fine I won’t. I was just trying to be nice.” That’s when Heidi heard it. In the background she heard a chainsaw going.
“J, what was that?”
“What was what?”
“Don’t play dumb with me. I heard a chainsaw.”
“Oh THAT. Just the chainsaw the repair guys are using to redo your kitchen. Look they said they would have it done today. Consider it a birthday present.”
“J, my birthday is in 8 months.”
“Well Christmas then.”
“Christmas is in 8 months.”
“Well then how about an April Fool’s day present?” Heidi cracked up laughing. April Fool’s day present?
“Sure an April Fool’s day present. Thanks J.” They talked for awhile because Heidi really didn’t feel like teaching then hung up. Just then the bell rang ending first period. Reluctantly everyone got up and left. The guys had really liked Scott once they got to know him. And the girls, well they just had fun staring at Scott.
“So did you get everything straightened out?” Scott asked Heidi who sat behind her desk rubbing her temples. She didn’t have a second hour class.
“Yeah. My new kitchen is an April Fool’s Day present.” Scott burst out loud laughing.
“Who ever heard of an April Fool’s day present? Boy you and J must be really good friends.”
“The best.” Just then they heard some more screaming and a panick stricken Ritchie ran into the classroom and slammed the door shut.
