REPAIR OR RESTORE?  WHICH IS IT?
REPAIR:  REPLACING THE COMPONENTS THAT WILL MAKE THE SET WORK.  IN SOME CASES, THIS IS ALL THAT'S NEEDED.  60'S ERA SETS CAN BE REPAIRED WITH LITTLE EFFORT.  THE MANUFACTURERS SWITCHED FROM BLACK BEAUTY CAPS TO MYLAR.  IN MOST CASES, THE MYLAR CAPS ARE STILL GOOD, BUT A BAD ONE MAY SLIP THROUGH THE CRACKS.  THE ELECTROLYTICS MAY STILL BE GOOD, OR MAY BECOME GOOD AGAIN IF THE SET IS PROPERLY SOFT STARTED.  MOST OF MY ZENITHS AND MY COLOR SETS WILL FALL UNDER THIS CATEGORY.   THEN AGAIN, ELECTROLYTIC CAPS ARE ALWAYS A WEAK LINK.  THEY SHOULD BE REPLACED ANYWAY.  IF ALL YOU NEED TO DO IS REPLACE THE LYTICS, THIS WOULD BE CONSIDERED A REPAIR.  THE SAME WOULD BE TRUE IF THE CRT IS ALL THAT WAS NEEDED.    BE CAREFUL.  THERE WERE MANY HACK REPAIRMEN BACK IN THE DAY.  IF YOU SEE PARTS FLOATING IN AIR OR ANYTHING THAT LOOKS LESS THAN PROFESSIONAL, I WOULD GO FOR TOTAL RESTORATION.   ZENITH SETS MADE FROM 1960 TO THE END OF THE TUBE ERA MAY ONLY NEED REPAIRED.  THEN AGAIN, THEY MAY ONLY NEED TOUCHED UP.  MY COMBO IS A PRIME EXAMPLE OF THIS.

  RESTORATION:  RESTORATION IS THE REPLACEMENT OF KNOWN BAD COMPONENTS AND THOSE THAT WILL FAIL AS SOON AS POWER IS APPLIED.  THIS MOSTLY INVOLVES CAPS.  POST WAR AND 50'S ERA SETS WILL NEED COMPLETE RESTORATION.  ALL PAPER AND ELECTROLYTIC CAPS WILL NEED TO BE REPLACED.  IN THE CASE OF SOME PHILCO SETS, COUPLATES MAY NEED TO BE REBUILT.  TOTALLY RECAPPING A SET IS REALLY THE WAY TO GO.  IF YOU SEE PAPER CAPS, OR BLACK BEAUTY CAPS, DON'T BOTHER TRYING TO REPAIR IT.  RESTORE IT.  YOU WILL SAVE YOURSELF MANY HEADACHES, AND POSSIBLY COMPONENTS THAT SUFFER FROM "UNOBTAINIUM."  RESTORATION MAY ALSO INCLUDE DEALING WITH RUBBER COVERED WIRING.  IF YOU ARE INTO PREWAR SETS, THIS MAY BE AN ISSUE.  IF YOU HAVE ANY DOUBTS, AFTER THE SOFT START, RESTORE.
