Setsuna is the main character of the story, and thus is the current reincarnation of the great angel Alexiel. His own true love his his very blood sister, Sara and he is tormented by this forbidden love. Setsuna soon discovers that he is right in the middle of a battle between heaven and hell, when he sees angels and demons appear before him. Eventually, him and Sara confess their love to each other, but soon after Sara is killed while trying to protect him. The moment Sara died, the great power he holds was released leading to the destruction of Tokyo. He is in fact the Messiah of the world, the one who Is destined to save the human race from being destroyed by God's will. Yet knowing this, his main concern is still his sister Sara. he travels to the world of the dead to try and save her, but when he returns to the Material World, his body is gone and he is now in Alexiel's body. He is soon brought back to his original body and is contacted by Zephikel, who tells him that Sara has been put in trial in Heaven. He then undergoes a difficult mission to try and save her�
Sara is Setsuna's sister, and is also in love with her brother. After trying to protect Setsuna, she dies and is sent to Hell because she committed the sin of loving her brother. She is rescued by Zaphikel, however, who takes her to Heaven to be judged for a punishment. Later, she wakes up in another body, the body of Jibril, who is an angel of water, also blind. After her trial in heaven, she is returned to her own body and life by the powers of Raphael.
Setsuna's friend, can be referred to as a brother-type figure to him. He also has another identity, he is the soul inside a sword called Nanatsusaya, which only Alexiel can control. His original form as the sword was lost during the great battle between Alexiel and Rociel. He would have died had it not been for him being showered by Rociel's blood. If the blood mark on his body disappears, he will lose this power. Later on realizes his soul is Lucifer, the lord of hell. He begins to remember some of his shadowy past, until he is killed by Rociel in Anagura while trying to save Setsuna.
He was a drug dealer, and also Sayuka Kira's best friend. His body is soon possessed by Rociel and Setsuna's by Alexiel, so during this, Katou was killed and sent to Hades. When Setsuna goes down to Hades to save Sara, he guides him to where she supposedly is. Setsuna sees that Yue had a bad childhood, but shows him that his sister still cares for him. When Setsuna's body died, he arrived on Earth as the Messiah and has the ability to become Setsuna's shadow. In Anagura, he disappears, but is found later by Setsuna in Heaven.
A classmate and friend of Sara's, falls in love with Setsuna. She is given the game "Angel Sanctuary" by Katan, which begins to make her change personas. She begins to hate Sara because Setsuna loves her and blames her for her blindess. When Rociel awakes, he gives her sight but loses her body when he absorbs the spiritual power that she has. Fortunately, she saves Sara from the demon Kirie, and leaves.
