| In UC 0081, Admiral Richard J. Carter was given approval to begin the development of an elite corp of newtype soldiers in order to hunt down Zeon remnants. In order to provide adequate equipment for this new unit, Carter saw to the resurrection of the G-4 Project and the Gundam "Alex", as well as several additional Gundam designs that until that point had either been scrapped or abandoned. One of the units picked up by the carter administration was the Gundam AM-4, an alternate blueprint for the Alex that features greatly improved generator output, speed, and a much higher reaction time. Much like it's cousin the Fire Gundam, Bomber Gundam was intended as a medium range support unit, replacing both of it's forearm gatlings with up to four IR guided micro missiles. In addition, this suit is normally equipped with an SSWS (Support Strike Weapon System) armor add on that carries additional propellant tanks, added verniers for maneuverability, and several extra box missile launchers on the arms and legs that carry up to 24 micro-missiles. The most interesting feature of this mobile suit is it's cockpit system. Like all other Gundams, it is equipped with a FLS/HUD system that synchronizes the mobile suit's head with the pilot's. However, this suit's primary display method is the "psycomu interface", which is basically a modified space helmet with several psy-wave transistors mounted on the inside. When functioning properly, this system translates sensor data from the mobile suit's computer into harmonic wave patterns that a newtype's brain can detect and interpret directly without having to directly use any other senses. This gives the pilot a greater sense of situational awareness, as well as improved reaction time, perception and pre-cognition in combat situations. Using this type of system, the average newtype pilot may increase his or her reaction time by up to 10%, while an exceptional newtype can increase his or her reaction speed by up to 40% or 50%. When it is not functioning properly, however, the interface has been known to overload a newtype's normal brain activity, unusually resulting serious injury (brain damage), memory loss, homicidal dementia, and in some cases death can result. |
