"This Gundam is unlike any other mobile suit in the Federation, so it'll be a little hard to adjust to, even for the most experienced pilots." - Christina Mackenzie
In UC 0081, Admiral James Carter was given approval to begin the developement of an elite corp of newtype soldiers in order to hunt down Zeon remnants. In order to provide adequate equipment for this new unit, Carter saw to the resurection of the G-4 Project and the Gundam "Alex", as well as several additional Gundam designs that until that point had either been scrapped or abbandonned. In order to strengthen his slightly under-equipped unit, Carter arranged for the G-4 team to construct two additional mobile suits based on the Gundam Alex. For all intents and purposes, both of these units are essentially the same suit as the Alex except for their innovative new FLS (Forward Looking Sensor) unit mounted in it's head. This new tracking system allows for greater sensor resolution and target accuracy by focussing a huge ammount of sensory equipment directly in front of the head. Though this does limit the search radius of the sensors, the system is linked to a "HUD" interface mounted in a helmet that tracks the movement of the pilot's head and moves the mobile suit's head accordingly. This works very well in tandem with a newtype's natural searching ability, which actually makes up the bulk of the sensor array.
