"It's so fast, it's scary. Can someone really handle something this sensitive in combat?" - Christina Mackenzie
In UC 0079, Federation engineers sought to develope an advanced new Gundam class mobile suit for use by Amuro Ray, who's newtype abilities had pushed the original RX-78-2 Gundam to it's limits. Unfortunately, this new mobile suit became the object of a covert operation by the Zeon force's "Cyclops" Special Forces team, and was badly damaged in battle shortly before the Battle of Solomon. After the war, Federal engineers in Libot Colony rebuilt the wrecked mobile suit for eventual use by Amuro Ray in his new assignment to the assualt carrier Tarawa, but the political strife within the Federal Government saw to the cancellation of the entire project as well as the transfer of Amuro Ray to almost permanent innactive status. In late UC 0081, Admiral James Carter resurrected the G-4 program for his Project N research unit, employing the mobile suit to the Assault Carrier Tarawa for use by Amuro Ray in future operations. Unfortunately, Amuro himself would be denied the oportunity to participate in the operation, and the rebuilt Gundam eventually fell into the care of a troubled but extremely tallented youth named Naomi Wilson.

Despite it's new designation under the Gundam Developement Program, the rebuilt Gundam Alex is essentially the same suit as it's One Year War incarnation except for it's innovative new FLS (Forward Looking Sensor) unit mounted in it's head. This new tracking system allows for greater sensor resolution and target accuracy by focussing a huge ammount of sensory equipment directly in front of the head. Though this does limit the search radius of the sensors, the system is linked to a "HUD" interface mounted in a helmet that tracks the movement of the pilot's head and moves the mobile suit's head accordingly. This works very well in tandem with a newtype's natural searching ability, which actually makes up the bulk of the sensor array.
