"Attack on Iraq," three words that cause apprehension in the hearts of
people around the world. Should the United States continue to rid the world
of terrorism by attacking Iraq? Most Americans have strong opinions on whether
our country should declare war on Iraq and Jenkins Middle School students
are no exception.
According to American Press Association opinion poll, "Americans say
they're concerned about a possible war with Iraq and believe terrorism should
be a priority for the nation."
Jenna Harris stated "we should attack Iraq because they killed 3000 people
in the World Trade Center attack and support the Afghans and expect us not
to do anything."
Sixth grader Mia Scapetlati agreed saying, "They killed thousands of
people we don't want bullies picking on us."
Americans tend to approve US military action to remove Suddam Hussein
however, most Americans would prefer to wait for the UN or Senate approval.
Eighth grader Leighanne Green agreed, "We should have Congress approval before
attacking Iraq because there may be people that don't think it's right."
Seventh grader Jenna Harris agreed saying "I think the public should be
able to vote on it in Congress because war affects everyone not just him (President
Bush)."
According to an AP/CBS press poll, 86% of Americans presently approve
military action to try to remove Suddam Hussein while 24% disapprove - figures
that haven't changed much since the attack on 9/11. The public still believes
an attack is needed but it is not convinced it needs to happen immediately.
The American public does believe that Iraq is a threat to our country
whether it is biological or nuclear attack. People in the US fear the possibility
of an attack.
Eighth grader Leighanne Green stated, "I believe we don't know when or
where they might attack the US."
Jenna Harris stated, "I am afraid of an attack a little because it could
be anywhere, I am especially afraid of a biologic attack."
It appears the majority of Americans believe we should hold back for
now until we gain support of our allies.
Mia Scapetlati stated that "So many supported us with 9-11 that we need
the same."
Seventh grader, Jenna Harris stated, "I believe we should have the support
of the other countries so they know they wouldn't have to worry about it happening
to them."
The American public sees "Attack on Iraq" as a possibility for the United
States. The thoughts among the JMS students appears to be parallel in that
of the rest of the country.
