Thyroid

A thyroid panel should be done on all breeding dogs on a yearly basis after one year of age for Maltese. The female dog’s heat cycles can influence these test results. They should be tested during anestrus. I recommend using Michigan State University’s Animal Health Diagnostic Lab and following up by registering the results with the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals’ database. Affected dogs should not be bred.
