| Roots of ECM | |||||||||||||||||||||||||
| The roots of Every Child Ministries (ECM) go back to 1981, when John and Lorella Rouster went to Congo (the Zaire) as missionaries with another agency, and quickly realized the desperate and widespread need of the Churches for help in learning to teach the children. In 1985, with the help of Christian friends, they helped found Every Child Ministries (ECM) to meet that specific need. For the next five years, ECM sent teacher training teams each summer to hold Sunday school training seminars in many locations throughout the Bandundu Province of Congo. These teams trained Sunday school teachers directly and assisted churches wanting to get a Sunday school for children started. During this time, Lorella realized the need for a written manual that would allow those trained to review the principles they had learned, and to teach others. She began developing a teacher training manual, revising it each year with input from the training seminars and the African staff that ECM paid small stipends to help develop the Sunday school ministry. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||

| Expanding Fields | |||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Over the years Every Child Ministries expanded to many African countries, always keeping their vision of offering the hope of Jesus for the forgotten children of Africa. From DR Congo ECM has started Sunday schools in neighboring Congo Brazzaville and in Angola. ECM entered Ghana in 1999, and it has since become a major ECM Center with work in several regions and reaching out into Togo and Benin. Uganda is ECM's most recent new field, beginning in 2006 and reaching out into New (southern) Sudan. ECM in the U.S. is a support ministry and a training ministry to the African diaspora. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||
| ECM'S Emphases in Uganda | |||||||||||||||||||||||||
| From the beginning until now, Every Child Ministries God has laid on the hearts of ECM leaders the needs of African children. As we became aware of those needs, they became our own. Today ECM places a great emphasis on groups of forgotten or marginalized children. In Uganda ECM's emphasis so far is on orphans, children in dire poverty living in slums, displaced and war-affected children. Although we have been in Uganda only two years, already we have been able to start two child sponsorship programs to send children to school and offer spiritual, nutritional and other support, hold Day Camps for children in two needy locations, hold a one-day medical clinic in a resettlement village in cooperation with another ministry, organize a Christmas Festival in an IDP camp, train teachers for children's ministries in two locations, distribute soccer balls to churches for children's ministry, and develop a National Ministry Center. And this is only the beginning. We plan much more for the days ahead, as God gives us strength and as more partners join the team. Some of our goals include: ---Vocational training/ self-sufficiency projects ---Children's home/ orphanage ---More child sponsorship programs & educational assistance programs ---Books for Ugandan schools & church libraries AND LOTS MORE. |
