An Aztec god, the god of the sun. His name, from Aztec ancient "huitzilin" meaning "hummingbird", carries the Aztec belief that dead Aztec warriors would come back as hummingbirds. His mother was Coatlicue, conceived him after keeping her bosom a ball of hummingbird feathers - that is, the soul of a fallen warrior - that dropped from the sky.
Huitzilpochtli fed on human hearts and blood, which they called 'Pa-chi', "the opening of the mouth". Prisinor's of war and dead fighters were sacrificed to the god. Such warriors became part of the sun, and then were incarnated into the bodies of hummingbirds. A temple still stands today as an ancient Aztec building, in his honour. It stands in Tenochtitln.
