Athena was a daughter of Zeus, often spoken of as his favourite child, many times trusting her with his mighty shield, one of his prized possesions. A virign goddess, she was sometimes referef to as "The Maiden". Athena is the goddess of war, and was a strong supporter on the Greek side in the Trojan war.
Among her gifts to man were the inventions of the plow and the flute, the art of taming animals, building ships, and making footware. She was often associated with birds, mainly the owl. There has been a temple dedicated to her, and it stands in Athens, Greece. It is dedicated to Athena Parthenos (the Virgin Athena). Click here to see it.
